A Couple of Losers

According to the Twitter feed of cardiothoracic surgeon, author and TV host Mehmet Oz — @DrOz — couples are twice more likely to become obese once they marry. It’s no easy feat to stave off the pudge in this world of fried beer, Double Down sandos and Starbucks Plenta-size Java Chip Frappuccinos. Take for example, Joe Cross and Phil Staples,…

Frolic Hard

It’s only a matter of time until the beer industry does to Easter what it has already done to Mardi Gras, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day: the distribution of branded Easter beads and pastel-colored Bud Light Lime bottles to bars while generally encouraging a sexxxy, drunken Carnival atmosphere during what’s supposed to be a celebration of bunnies and the Messiah’s…

Gong: Consider Yourself Banged

In the 1970s, The Gong Show mocked the TV variety hour with talentless contestants whose amateur performances went on until a judge hit a gong. Lawrence filmmaker and musician Rich Housh borrows the title, but his Gong Show has nothing in common with Chuck Barris’ bad-taste classic — except, of course, the gong. As Roush says in his press release,…

Tips Are Not Enough

The folks at Greater Kansas City Jobs With Justice and Recycled Rockstar Industries are teaming up to fight an effort to repeal part of a law, passed in 2006, that gave Missourians not only a better minimum wage but also the promise of cost-of-living adjustments (COLA). The battle plan for the Save Our Raise campaign includes a benefit show starring…

A Strong Foundation

Kansas Citians with their ears to the ground are well aware of Foundation Architectural Reclamation in the West Bottoms (1221 Union, 816-283-8990). By day, people wander the modest, exposed-brick building and admire architectural artifacts. At night, the gallery’s Foundation Room showcases the work of local artists and designers before and during local bands’ sets. “Creating events like the Urban Bazaar,…

Rock and Wild

The lineup for Saturday’s Rock Culture Convention is a serious clusterfuck — in the best way. Of course, this festival of fishnets and permanent ink features bands, including Queens Club, Not a Planet and Brian “Head” Welch (the ex-Korn guitarist who turned over the Jesus leaf). Also appearing: a Suicide Girl (Rachael Reckless), a guy who tried to win American…

Oh, the Humanity

In 2006, Kansas City, Kansas, Community College Board of Trustees member Nancy Hernandez brought back the WYCO Ethnic Festival: A Human Family Reunion, which hadn’t been held for 30 years. Well, it’s back yet again. Learn about global culture from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the KCKCC Field House (7250 State Avenue, 913-334-1100), when singers, dancers, rappers and musicians…

Hyde Park Hallelujah

Dust off that Sunday crown for the one day of the year when everyone goes to church. But we aren’t judging, and neither are the folks who are putting on the midtown multi-faith Easter Service at Pilgrim Chapel (3801 Gillham, 816-753-6719). Led by Dr. Roger Coleman and the Rev. Elizabeth Coleman, this nondenominational service features dramatic readings and music by…

Put Down the Peeps, Ma’am

The late Nell Mitchell, a former Overland Park resident and Paseo High School gym teacher, left $1 million to the Johnson County Community College Foundation. The idea: to provide continuing health education, including the annual wellness fair that promotes well-being and fitness. It takes place in the fieldhouse of the gymnasium at JCCC (northwest section of campus, 12345 College Boulevard,…

Dramatis Personal

The Tragedy of Arthur, an unconventional novel by Arthur Phillips, functions on different levels. The book contains the entire text of a supposedly unknown play about King Arthur by pantaloons-clad historical personage William Shakespeare himself that has been “rediscovered,” and the book’s preface takes the form of author Phillips’ fictitious memoir. The novel becomes an Inception-like layering of abstractions into…

August Busch IV offers $1.5 million to settle wrongful-death lawsuit in death of his girlfriend

Didn’t take August Busch IV long to make a settlement offer in the wrongful-death lawsuit over the accidental drug-overdose death of his girlfriend, Adrienne Martin, at his mansion. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the former Anheuser-Busch beer baron has offered $1.5 million to settle the lawsuit, which was filed in late March. A deal was reportedly brokered between attorneys…

J-School students to Mizzou: Don’t make us buy iPads

Already stuck with iPod Touches that were rarely, if ever, used in calls,  journalism students are saying enough is enough to the University of Missouri, which is considering requiring students to buy iPads. Student newspaper The Maneater is taking a stand against the proposed requirement, calling the last required tech buy “nothing but a bust” and the devices were “hardly,…

Bill Callahan brings Apocalypse to RecordBar in June

Alternative singer-songwriter Bill Callahan has had a pretty extensive career. With 11 albums released under his band, Smog, and four more released as a solo artist — including his latest, Apocalypse, released just this month — he has influenced artists such as John Vanderslice and Cat Power’s Chan Marshall, and his music has been featured in British cinema and even…

Bulleit Rye whiskey on tap at the Union of Westport? Yes, please.

What drink best complements a rock show? That’s right: It’s whiskey! The golden-colored liquor that never lets a person down. It’s great alone, mixed or when served from the bar’s tap. Yeah, that’s right. I typed tap. The Union of Westport (421 Westport Road) is now serving whiskey on tap. I talked with Justin Norcross, the Union’s general manager, to…

Five odes to sticky, skunky bud, in honor of 4-20

Though I’m fronting for the stoner anthem, I mean no disrespect. I don’t mean to degrade a song’s appeal by suggesting its only functional level is a song you can smoke a joint to — a song only enjoyable when the edges of one’s own perception have become a little frayed. In fact, the songs I’ve chosen, by all means,…
