Rock and Roll Fashion Show, featuring attractive people, and Soft Reeds, Roman Numerals and Heroes and Villains and more

Fashion and rock and roll: insert a “match-made-in-heaven” platitude here. A Rock and Roll Fashion Show went down this weekend at Crosstown Station, which featured attractive people, rad tunes, and several local bands worth ogling. Check out a slideshow here. The right casserole for a speedy recovery

Macaroni-and-cheese is the all-time comfort casserole. I received a call from a Fat City reader last week with a bittersweet request: A friend of hers was going through chemotherapy and a group of friends had agreed to take dinner to the woman’s family on different nights. A casserole seemed the obvious choice, since it could be prepared in advance and then…

Joe Posnanski clarifies four-year-old Dayton Moore remark

Joe Posnanski now writes for a national audience at Sports Illustrated. But the former Kansas City Star columnist has not forgotten his roots, as he spends a disproportionate amount of his energy describing the tormented sports lives of Cleveland (his hometown) and Kansas City (his place of residence). JoePo’s latest Dispatch From Miseryville considers the Royals’ acquisition of outfielder Jeff…

Five dessert trends for 2011

Napoleon Bakery’s desserts aren’t trendy, just delicious. The National Restaurant Association recently listed its predictions — based on a poll of American chefs — of 2011’s top five dessert trends. They’re not exactly earth-shattering, given that many of these “trends” have already been standard desserts in many Kansas City restaurants for the past several years.  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink…

Kevin Kietzmann awkwardly drools over KC Chief Thomas Jones’ girlfriend, Meagan Good

The Kansas City Chiefs had a bad, bad Sunday. The only positive quarterback Brodie Croyle has to look forward to is going home to Kelli Croyle. Speaking of hot player wives and girlfriends, 810 WHB’s Kevin Kietzmann made Chiefs running back Thomas Jones clearly uncomfortable last week when he started asking questions about Jones’ girlfriend, Meagan Good. Why you should have lunch at Coda

My lunch at Coda (1744 Broadway) didn’t start off very well. Although it certainly wasn’t the fault of the Crossroads bar and grill. I couldn’t open the door. But just as I was casually going to walk away and pretend that I hadn’t been tugging fruitlessly on the handle, a face appeared in the window and waved me in. “We…

Watch Everyday/Everynight’s moody and kind of bloody new video

On Friday, sad-eyed indie rockers Everyday/Everynight premiered a new video at a show at Crosstown Station. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it, because I was too busy vomiting in the parking lot outside of the Pitch’s holiday party!  The name of the song is the same as the name of the band, but the video was done by Zac Eubank/Aren’t We…

Man found dead downtown Sunday morning may have frozen to death

If it wasn’t bad enough that Kansas Citians are killing each other, now the weather is freezing people to death.  A man was found dead next to a fence at Ninth and McGee Sunday morning. Saturday’s temperature of 12 degrees and cutting wind has led to speculation that the man died due to cold weather. Categories: News

Nerd alert: TRON suite, anyone?

Nerds everywhere are already overexcited about Daft Punk’s soundtrack to Tron. (Hell, one of the songs was number one on Nick Spacek’s best songs of 2010 list.) Now, you can live (and sleep) the soundtrack — well, if you live in Sweden, that is. (Via Designboom) Categories: Music Tags: Daft Punk, sweden, Tron

New York Giants stranded in Kansas City Saturday; Metrodome roof collapses (video)

A midwestern snowstorm stranded the NFL’s New York Giants in Kansas City on Saturday. Good thing the Giants didn’t make it to Minneapolis. On Sunday, the roof of the Metrodome, Minnesota Vikings’ stadium, collapsed, spilling an avalanche of snow onto the field in an apocalyptic-like video (watch the video after the jump). Mini Mansions, Queens of the Stone Ages’ Michael Shuman’s project, is chock full of ’60s rock

Ever wonder what would have happened if the Jesus and Mary Chain had sworn its allegiance to the Beatles rather than to the Beach Boys? Well, you don’t have to: Mini Mansions’ ’60s-inflected psych-pop answers that question. Though the Los Angeles trio doesn’t play music drenched in feedback, it shares a similar love of classic pop hooks, alluring vocal harmonies…

Four gifts to get your music lover

Music lovers are a tricky bunch. Don’t think you can just run out and grab the new Kanye album, and check ’em off your list. (They’ve already torrented it, and besides, they think it’s overrated anyway.) Here are some thoughtful ideas for you lovers of music lovers during the holiday season. If they’re not of the guitar-playing persuasion — in…

The Donut Whole is circular breakfast in Wichita

Bacon is not without a sense of humor. Just as I declared myself ready to swear it off, the fatty links pull me back in. On the way out of Wichita yesterday morning, I stopped in at the Donut Whole (1720 East Douglas), where the best-selling of the 25 available varieties is “Maple Bacon.” “It’s like a pancake breakfast with…

So…can Ke$ha actually sing?

Whoa. Looks like Ke$ha may actually have some talent behind all that glitter, grime, whiskey-breath, blue lipstick, and…yeah, I’ll stop there. Unlike Miley, Ke$ha actually knows some of the pop star references she makes in her songs. (She threatens to kick ’em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger in “Tik Tok,” remember?) Check out this no-autotune-necessary video…
