Best Bets

Underground-famous West Coast MC Planet Asia rocks the Czar Bar mic along with M-Eighty, who has the distinction of holding the world record for longest freestyle ever. (Over nine hours, if you’re wondering.) Local boys Steddy P and DJ G-Train support.  In Lawrence, Psychedelic Horseshit brings their snotty, druggy garage rock to the Replay. Recommended if you like No Age, Wavves, and Times New Viking —…

Where’s my Absolut Kansas City?

“Ah, San Diego…drink it in, it always goes down smooth,” — Ron Burgundy, circa 1970. While the essence of San Diego hasn’t yet been bottled — you’ll have to settle for a deep breath — Brooklyn is now available in bottle form. Absolut Vodka has collaborated with director Spike Lee to create a limited edition Absolut Brooklyn, which has red…

New mixtapes from T.I., Raekwon

Just a few months fresh out of the clink, T.I. dropped Fuck a Mixtape, a collaboration with DJ Drama and DJ MLK that’s part of the Gangsta Grillz series. Apart from the skits and dialogue tracks — where Tip’s famous non-rapper friends like Jamie Foxx, Lil Duval, and Kevin Hart endlessly feign surprise and confusion that T.I. has released a mixtape…

To hell with expiration dates at Dirty Don’s!

I have a couple of friends who swear by the deals at Dirty Don’s Bargain Center, that giant warehouse filled with salvaged products and close-out merchandise at 9700 E. 56th Street, right off Raytown Road. Me? I have to be in the right mood for prowling through all those boxes and shelves of stuff and refrigerated cases — everything from shoes…

Guitar Syndicate makes front page of the Wall Street Journal

The Guitar Syndicate, Inc., Scott Burnett and Ralph Perta’s boutique guitar and accessories shop at 1819 Central in the Crossroads, is receiving a healthy amount of national attention today after being featured prominently in a front-page Wall Street Journal article about e-commerce on social-media sites.  Burnett and Perta use an e-commerce shopping cart application that allows visitors to purchase gear directly…

The Oil Rig Gig

In response to the oil spill disaster, Kansas City artists gathered at the BP gas station on Westport Road (across from the Record Bar) on Memorial Day for the Oil Rig Gig. The event, curated by Mark Southerland, Helen Gillet, Jeff Harshbarger and Peregrine Honig, was a short act of civil disobedience to make a public point about the international…

Orange Julius: The revival of a brand

The last time I tasted a frothy, creamy Orange Julius drink was two decades ago in the lumbering retail dinosaur known as Metcalf South Mall. That little beverage stand is long gone, although a few local shopping malls still feature places to purchase the unique sweet beverage, which dates back to 1929. The best-known of the mall locations is in…

Nothing like a big healthy breakfast (Update)

You want ketchup with that, hon? Update: Let’s toss a flapjack in the air in honor of commenter Caroline who correctly guessed that Perkin’s serves this particular breakfast combo platter. The Tremendous Twelve features three eggs, cooked any style, four pieces of bacon, and four pancakes or toast. It’s a bargain at $8. But it does inspire gluttony — even…

New Releases, Tuesday, June 1

Sleigh Bells’ Treats, the most hysterically hyped debut of 2010, gets its physical release today. (It’s been out digitally since May 11.) If you even casually read about music on the web, you have probably heard at least a few tracks. If not, they sound like Crystal Castles or M.I.A. (who is releasing the album through her N.E.E.T. label in conjunction…

National food holidays don’t make sense

While there are an endless number of food holidays — today is apparently National Hazelnut Cake Day — most of them have no real connection to the day on which they fall. It’s time for that to change. With three simple steps, America can have a definitive set of food holidays that will provide more fodder for food blogs and…

Insane Clown Posse at Memorial Hall

Insane Clown Posse may be from Detroit, but the group’s Saturday night show here felt like a homecoming, with rabid chants of FA-MI-LY echoing through Memorial Hall. A legion of ICP followers turned the show into a dark carnival where face paint, Faygo, sweat and pot abounded. Among much overheard juggalo and juggalette chatter, a moment that stands out: a…

Cream cheese and chocolate at Boulevard Bakery

With bakeries, it’s all too easy to get into routines. I get my povitica at MeMa’s (unless I’m near Strawberry Hill), my lemon cookie at JaWa Le’s Bakery-Bistro, and my mini muffins at the Classic Cookie. When you start to have the exact change ready or the counter staff doesn’t even bother to ask what else you want, you might…

Royals roundup: Love for Billy Butler (and Allard Baird)

Royals first baseman Billy Butler ranks among the league leaders in batting average. It’s a pretty remarkable feat for a guy who looks as though he receives regular custard injections. Lugging that weight out of the batter’s box, Bam Bam just doesn’t beat out many ground balls. The Royals drafted Butler in 2004, after he completed his senior year of…

Aggie Stackhaus in the mud at Rockfest? Check out the photos!

In the muddy aftermath of this year’s Rockfest, Kansas City Parks Board commissioner Aggie Stackhaus was the loudest critic. Stackhaus told The Kansas City Star that she didn’t want the annual rock concert to return to Penn Valley Park because of concertgoers’ lack of manners. But we’re starting to wonder if Stackhaus is protesting a little too much, especially after…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, June 1

%{}% You probably only need one, but here are 20 reasons to visit the Riot Room. While the gumbo was good, the redfish and staff left something to be desired at Cafe Roux in Leawood’s Park Place. These are ten things you didn’t know about bananas. Here’s a slideshow guide on how to poach an egg. Categories: Dining, Food &…

Insane Clown Posse at Memorial Hall

Insane Clown Posse’s show on Saturday night called a legion of followers to Memorial Hall, where face paint, Faygo, sweat and pot abounded in the juggalo- and juggalette-infested crowd.

Troy Davis charged in ‘society killing’ of Michael Tutera

A second man has been charged in the shooting death of Kansas City businessman Michael J. Tutera. Jackson County prosecutors charged 22-year-old Troy J. Davis with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and burglary, according to The Kansas City Star. On Friday, prosecutors filed similar charges against 18-year-old Matthew T. Hendrix, a University of Missouri-Kansas City student. Categories: News Tags: homicide,…
