Kansas lawmakers debate abortion costs, contest pissing abilities

Based on the three-hour debates reps in the Kansas House engage in, maybe they haven’t noticed we have a $400 million deficit. On Wednesday, the House debated a bill that would alter life insurance regulation. But that wasn’t enough — no, no — because some reps decided to tack on a provision that would stop insurers from covering abortions, except…

Los Cabos opens in Mission Farms

Los Cabos — the twelfth restaurant from KC Hopps — opened last Monday in Mission Farms. Today it debuts a new menu with several additional seafood and vegetarian items.  “We look at every concept and decide if it’s something we can do well,” says Chris Sutton, CEO of KC Hopps. “In this case, we felt like we had the talent…

Kansas Citians, blame your misery on the Chiefs and Royals

Last year, Forbes called Kansas City the eighth emptiest city in America. This year, the news doesn’t get any better: Forbes ranks KC 13th in its list of “America’s 20 Most Miserable Cities.” Just how did they come to that ranking: High taxes and crime rates hurt Kansas City’s standing, but what moved them up our misery list were its…

Human remains found in Blue Summit

Human remains were found in Blue Summit, multiple sources are reporting. KMBC Channel 9 reports that a neighbor found a skull in the woods near East 18th Street and Laurel Avenue. The remains are now with the Jackson County Medical Examiner but there hasn’t been an identification made yet, KMBC says. Categories: News Tags: Blue Summit, Human remains, missouri

Can you smell what Tomfooleries is cooking?

When not talking smack, WWE star Matt Hardy is apparently attempting to make a go of it as a restaurant critic. In a video posted to YouTube yesterday (spotted by the Plog’s Justin Kendall), Hardy and fellow wrestler R-Truth sit down for drinks and food at “Tomfooleries … out near the airport … in Kansas City.”  “Oh yeah, a little…

Kansas City police’s one-man dance party (video of the day)

The Kansas City police’s in-car cameras often capture frightening and bizarre videos. This isn’t one of them. Chief Jim Corwin writes on his blog that officers on patrol are asked to make sure their dash cams are working before their shifts begin — and here’s a nice reminder to make sure the camera is working. Courtesy of the chief, we…

Two arrested in connection with death of 3-week-old girl

Liberty police arrested two people yesterday in connection with the death of a 3-week-old girl, The Kansas City Star reports. The child’s cause of death hasn’t been determined yet and no charges have been filed, the Star says. So we don’t know any names. View Larger Map On Monday, paramedics and police officers responded to a call of an infant…

Breakfast Buffet: Thursday, February 18

%{}% Could there be anything sweeter for football players (and watchers) than a Lombardi Trophy made of bacon? It’s MockDonald’s week at The Drop, with items like the McShortrib sandwich — although sadly no happy meals. Want to know which state eats the most fast food or drinks the most soda pop? There’s a map for that. The world’s strongest…

Kansas smoking hypocrites: Reps say fake pot’s dangerous but don’t mind tobacco (and its money)

The cover story in this week’s Pitch is about the Kansas Legislature’s rush to ban fake marijuana. Besides being an excellent depiction of hysteria, Peter Rugg’s report exposes a certain irony in lawmakers’ effort to supposedly protect the people of Kansas. It took members of the state House and Senate approximately two weeks to ban a substance they know nothing…

Get free music for not lying to the government

If you make a promise to not lie to the government when they come through on this year’s census, the group Voto Latino will give you 25 free songs. As one might guess from the group’s name, they’re aiming for Latino voters, but anyone willing to sign up on this form gets access to an iTunes link for a free…

Rock of Pages: Flavorpak zine

It’s a damn shame that the Internet pretty much killed zines. While it’s cheaper to put together a blog — in other words, “free” — than to print up and distribute a zine, the layout options were so much more fantastic. You had folks who would make works of art using the cut-and-paste punk rock aesthetic, kids doing what they…

‘Edward is brown like roast turkey’: Studies in Crap remembers why we needed hip-hop

Each Thursday, your Crap Archivist brings you the finest in forgotten and bewildering crap culled from basements, thrift stores, estate sales and flea markets. I do this for one reason: Knowledge is power. “Black people are different colors,” Vivian Church points out on page four of Colors Around Me her marvelously blunt children’s book. Then, page after page, Church and…

INTO THE WOODS

To a rickety old cabin in ominous, fog-enshrouded environs, add five college students with questionable judgment. Stir up murderous phantasms. Fold in gallons of blood. Shake. That’s a recipe for horror. Now add singing, dancing, slapstick and a “splatter zone” for serious patrons of the arts occupying the front rows. That’s the recipe for the Kansas City premiere run of…

AROUND THE WORLD IN THREE DAYS

Your budget is tight, or you’re out of vacation days, or the Transportation Security Administration is on your case because you share a name with someone on the watch list who tweeted that he stowed an IED in his checked luggage — those are the times we’re especially thankful that cinema is our backup passport to the world. For beleaguered…

President’s Past

Barack Obama was inaugurated as the first black president a little more than a year ago, and the annual Kansas Reads project happens to coincide with Black History Month. So Obama’s Dreams From My Father, with its Kansas ties (Obama’s mother was born and raised in El Dorado) and its “broad-based appeal that encourages and sustains spirited discussion” (according to…

Academic Relations

It’s the old “he said, she said,” updated for the era of sexual harassment. In truth, Oleanna, David Mamet’s bristling and divisive dust-up of a drama, concerns more of a “she said he took advantage” — an allegation that fuels not just 75 minutes of Mamet’s wicked back-and-forths but also, no doubt, serious arguments among theatergoers afterward. Set in an…
