KCMO Liquor Control’s latest victim: Kennedy’s Bar & Grill

Whoever these thirsty, underage kids are who go undercover for the city’s Regulated Industries Division, they are good. Employees at Kennedy’s Bar & Grill, in Waldo at 500 West 75th Street, are the latest to fall for their tricks. Because someone sold liquor to a minor, the bar’s managing officer and Regulated Industries have agreed that Kennedy’s will close for…

Another reason to avoid head cheese

In a new salmonella warning, officials in Scott County, Missouri, are asking people who purchased head cheese in New Hamburg to discard it — raising the very real issue of whether it’s worth keeping one of the oldest residents of the deli counter in the rotation. You could sell me that the reward is worth the risk if we were…

Clothes Whores: ‘Ricardo Runs’ tees by Trick Pony Studio

Clothes Whores: Enthusiastically examining Kansas City’s sartorial shenanigansA million years ago (or in 2005, which is the same thing), I wrote about a “precious snowflake” of a guy named Ricardo Mejia. Back then, he was showing off his muscular legs beneath cheerleading skirts while dancing enthusiastically at the Hurricane, earning the role as the bar’s unofficial mascot. Mejia has since…

Careful, Shatto — Facebook is watching

Even new technology is not always sure how to deal with archaic laws, as evidenced by the recent criticism of Facebook for banning any promotions involving dairy products. Facebook has lumped dairy in with gambling, tobacco, firearms, prescription drugs and gasoline, in order to avoid running afoul of state laws. Dairy wasn’t singled out; it was just a question of…

Crown Center attracted nurses, let NCAA slip

Crown Center remade 85 acres of Kansas City in Hallmark’s image. It also provided competition for real-estate developers. The subject of this week’s feature, Crown Center introduced significant new hotel, residential, retail and office space. Upon its completion in 1971, the five-section, seven-story building that unfolds alongside Pershing Road added 660,000 square feet to the commercial real-estate market. City boosters…

Edward D. Shockey, 35, was sentenced yesterday to 25 years in prison for videotaping himself having sex with a 16-year-old girl. The sentence came after Shockey pleaded guilty to exploitation of a minor, statutory sodomy and promoting child pornography. Shockey’s acts were discovered when he sent a stack of DVDs to the victim’s boyfriend, according to Platte County Prosecutor Eric…

Worlds of Fun sold to certainly not evil world shapers

Worlds of Fun will go from being owned by a large, faceless, out-of-town company to being owned by an even larger out-of-town conglomerate with somehow even less face. Until now, the metro amusement park was owned by Cedar Fair L.P. —  a Sandusky, Ohio, company specializing in amusement and water parks. Coast to coast, the company owned 11 amusement parks, six outdoor water parks,…

Relic Tray: Singers & Swingers in the Kitchen

If you were a pop star in the late 1960s, man, it wasn’t groovy enough for you to simply soar to the top of the Billboard charts or appear on Hullabaloo or American Bandstand. You needed to cook too! In 1967, all hottest stars of TV, movies and the jukebox were featured in the 96-page paperback cookbook called Singers and…

Senior forwards Amanda Hanneman and Jessra Johnson have been suspended for a week now after news of the fight. Since then, the cheerleader, Justin Short (also…

Got bacon fatigue?

If you are tiring of bacon, there’s a reason. A new survey from market researcher Mintel shows that, compared to how much it was showing up in quick-serve menu offerings in 2005, bacon is now found in 26.5 percent more items. And as BurgerBusiness.com discovered, it’s the burger that opened the door for bacon to take over: Mintel finds that…

Kansans: Your next governor is praying to end health-care reform

Future Kansas Gov. and current U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback prayed yesterday to kill health-care reform. For real. Brownback got a seat at the Family Research Council’s table during yesterday’s 60-minute “prayercast” (Brownback is introduced at the 17:47 mark). Even as pornstached Lou Engle called on the people in the room to stand and pray, Brownback clung to his seat like…

It’s got everything: albums, singles, books, movies — totally ridiculous. And, also in there are the “Best of the Decade” lists. I believe this decade is going to be referred to as the “Naughts,”…

The Top 5 chilis in Kansas City

I’m starting to think bears know more than we do. When the weather gets cold, I just want a hot bowl of chili, followed by an extended nap. If you’re making your own, the base is pretty straightforward. Chop onion and garlic and saute them in a saucepan, then add a can of crushed tomatoes and several kinds of beans…
