MP3: Dead Man’s Bones, “My Body’s A Zombie For You”

A guy I work with subscribes to KEXP’s Song of the Day podcast, and ever since this song popped up, we’ve been playing it nearly daily. Dead Man’s Bones features actors Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, and is way better than most actor-turned-musician projects. As a matter of fact, it has a lot in common with Zooey Deschanel and M….

Clay Chastain: anti-hero?

Clay Chastain called last week to talk about his latest light rail plan, which he’ll kick off at Union Station on October 14 at “high noon.” “We’re going to try to repeat the political miracle of 2006,” Chastain told me. Chastain said he’ll pimp his latest plan on the 14th with a short speech, answer some questions from the media…

Man pleads guilty to hosting dog fights

Remember that big dog-fighting bust that took place this summer? The biggest dog fighting bust in the history of the United States? Justice is starting to reign down as we officially scrub the word “alleged” from our posts. Feel that freedom. Not you, Cris E. Bottcher. Yesterday, Bottcher, a 48-year-old nurse from Gilman City, Missouri, admitted to conspiracy to transport…

Jason Miller and Victoria, the severed deer head

Before he opened the door to his garage, revealing the key prop for his “shocking” stunt on September 25, Jason Miller was kind enough to ask me if I’m squeamish. (Answer: Yes, very.) Luckily, by the time I’d watched the animal rights activist arrange the severed deer head in a wicker basket, I had become immune to the oozing neck…

Letter to S.M. Park neighbors: Do not fear the sharpshooters

When the deer harvest in Shawnee Mission Park turned into a gigantic controversy, Johnson County Park and Recreation District officials got decidedly tight-lipped with activists and the media about when the hunt will begin. Get ready for gunshots, folks. Today, officials sent the following letter to neighbors of the 1,200-acre park.  As for the controversy, check back tomorrow for the…

An appreciation of the liquid lunch

It’s a classic image: Two men in suits having cocktails over lunch. It’s the lifestyle currently celebrated on Mad Men and seemingly yearned for by all the Mad Men viewers. And yet the liquid lunch appears to have gone the same direction as the 1960’s: wistfully remembered and only seen on television. Outside of Christmas parties, the idea of a…

KC Rep offers free show to public service employees

Pitch theater critic Alan Scherstuhl tells me that “Into the Woods” is the best show he’s ever seen at the Kansas City Rep. So if you’re a public service employee and you’re free Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Kansas City Repertory Theatre has a great deal. You can see the show for free. Here’s the full details: If you’re a…

Tonight: Tut Tut at the Czar Bar

Tonight, Tut Tut plays the Czar Bar with 20,000 Strongmen. They were offered this show kind of last minute and thus is not on the Czar Bar web site nor calendar, which is why you may not have heard about it. According to Tut Tut’s Alexander Abnos, 20,000 Strongmen plays “jangly folksy stuff, and a lot of the songs are…

Best of Extra: Server of the Year!

Joel O’Laughlin is waiting for his big break while waiting tables Joel O’Laughlin is a writer. He’s a waiter. He’s a writer and a waiter and the Reader’s Choice for “Best Waiter/Waitress” in this year’s Best of Kansas City issue. Since O’Laughlin — who has also dabbled in stand-up comedy — may have the perfect credentials for professional restaurant work, it’s…

Closed: Adam’s Rib Barbecue

It’s not news, by this point, that restaurateur Hope Loehr’s barbecue joint Adam’s Rib closed last week — six months and two days after it opened — just as we named her Best Barbecue: South in The Pitch’s annual Best of Kansas City issue. It was a bittersweet moment for Loehr to read the tribute to her Overland Park restaurant…

When will the Kansas City Chiefs win a game?

This Kansas City Chiefs’ season is just one kick in the ding ding after another. The New York Giants laid the smack down on Sunday, and the Cowboys are coming to town this week. So we’re wondering when the Chiefs will snap this four-game losing streak. (I’m looking at you, Cleveland; nothing like waiting until week 15 to break the…

Best of Extra: Readers’ pizza choices

Thin crust or deep dish? Classic or modern toppings? If you want to have an intense debate about food, just ask someone for their favorite pizza joint in Kansas City. The Readers’ Choice in this year’s Best of Kansas City poll was Waldo Pizza.  It appears there will also be a potential new entrant for next year, as Pizza Bar…

Tonight: Wilco at the Crossroads

Wilco had a busy weekend. They played the annual Farm Aid concert, which our colleagues at the Riverfront Times described as “loose and raw – more like the tightest jam session you’ll ever see than a well-orchestrated gig.” In addition, Wilco continued the chain of higher-quality musical guests on A Prairie Home Companion the past few weeks, fitting in nicely…

Speaking of prison romances …

John Manard, the escaped from the Lansing prison in a dog crate thanks to prison volunteer/dog trainer Toby Young, was sentenced to an additional 10 more years for packing heat during his run from Johnny Law, Crime Scene KC reports. Manard was serving a life sentence for a 1996 murder and carjacking. The Topeka Capital-Journal’s expose on Sunday about prison…

A closer look at beef inspection

Ground beef is one of the few foods that can make me uneasy because I can’t divorce the delicious joy of eating burgers from the very real fear of E.Coli contamination. While the odds suggest that a severe infection or death are highly unlikely, our current food safety system makes me weigh the benefits and risks in the same way…

Candy-eating kids = violent adults?

Will sweets-loving children turn into not-so-sweet adults? That’s the inference of a new British study that suggests that children who consume a lot of candy are more likely to be violent later in life.  Researcher Simon Moore of Cardiff University wanted to see if there was a relationship between diet and risk-taking behavior. When he cross-referenced questions on candy and…
