Breakfast Buffet: Thursday, 5/14

%{}% Here’s how to prepare ice cream without an ice cream maker. Granted it takes longer but I didn’t even know it was possible. A quandary over buying baked beans or making your own for a family gathering. I say buy them from a barbecue restaurant and then just claim them as your own. It disappeared for a couple of…

Daily Briefs: Everybody hates their jobs.

%{}% In space, no one can hear you bitch: The only people allowed to go into space are extraordinarily rich people like Mark Cuban who can actually pay Russians to launch them into orbit, or the astronauts in government space programs, who are qualified via a lot of fancy, rarefied knowledge such as how to fly jets and how to…

Old-School Circus

No, Zoppé isn’t a new iced-coffee beverage at Starbucks. It’s the name of an Italian family that has presented one-ring circus shows since 1842, when a French clown met an equestrian ballerina in Hungary and they eloped to Venice. It was an omen of the family’s fortunes: The Zoppé clan has toured the world with its old-fashioned namesake circus, carting…

Abstract Retrospective

The “color field” abstract painting style is usually characterized by flat planes of color presented as pure and striking compositions of form and color, without gesture or movement. The late Dan Christensen, a Kansas City Art Institute graduate, was a notable practitioner, though the range of his sizable body of work resists categorization. Through August 30, the Kemper Museum of…

Reconnected

“Art” is more than just paintings of bucolic forest cottages or porcelain bisque figurines of large-eyed children; many artists prefer to engage in conceptual work that must be experienced. The Urban Culture Project has a long history of nontraditional visual exhibitions and performances, including today’s 6 p.m. opening of Kansas City artist Paul Shortt’s Missed Connections, an examination of the…

Tangled Web

The Tony Award-winning musical Kiss of the Spider Woman carries a black widow’s bite.
