Daily Briefs: Super-Positive Rainbow Teddy Bear Monday

%{}% GOOD MORNING! The generally negative valence of Daily Briefs has been pointed out to me recently, much to my shock and amazement, a hybrid emotion that dog breeders have called “shamazement.” Starting today, with Super-Positive Rainbow Teddy Bear Monday, and continuing tomorrow with Happy Flower Club Ice Cream and Puppies Tuesday, you’ll be seeing a whole new morning news…

Breakfast Buffet: April, 4/27

Cycling and touring breweries. All in a weekend’s work for Boulevard’s racing team. A competitive new brewer enters the scene … just as soon as she gets some hints on brewing. A trip to the Zoo Bar ends well enough to make a top-10 list on reasons to visit again. The bar has been set for tailgating at Royals’ games…

God hates Kansas

Watched KMBC Channel 9’s coverage of the twister ripping through the prairie near Tonganoxie on Saturday. Johnny Rowlands chased the tornado in Newschopper 9 (and possibly crapped himself after a helluva lightning strike). The tornado charged toward KMBC Reporter Marcus Moore and photographer John Woods, who jumped in a ditch. If you missed it all, let the soothing voices of…

Concert Review: Junior Boys and Max Tundra at the Record Bar

REVIEW AND PHOTOS BY LAUREN LOYA Labelmates Junior Boys and Max Tundra don’t look like guys who inspire kinetic sensuality, but that’s what they got when they set up shop at the Record Bar Friday night. The jam-packed crowd bopped first to Tundra’s bright, erratic sounds — warm, melodic rays of sunshine one second, cheerful electronic noise the next. Tundra…

Consultant on P&L sends baffling e-mail

The Power & Light District generated $2.2 million in sales taxes last year. The city was expecting $14.1 million, a figure based on a consultant’s projection. The consultant, C.H. Johnson Consulting in Chicago, is the subject of this week’s column. I asked Charlie Johnson, the company president, to comment about the projection, which looks pretty shaky in practice. His reply…

The Give a Shit List

This week: Let Missouri legislators know you won’t stand for a lower minimum wage and half-ass sex education; help the local women’s political caucus by shelling out a few bucks to be inspired by an equal rights’ activist every woman should thank; and celebrate May Day with area workers who want justice for everyone who puts in a hard day’s…

Legends of Central States Wrestling celebrated at Memorial Hall Thursday night

The legends of Central States Wrestling received one more moment in Memorial Hall’s spotlight last night as K.C. On The Mat: The History of Professional Wrestling in Kansas City premiered in front of a couple hundred people. Kansas City’s wrestling stars of yesteryear took the stage and soaked in the accolades one more time. Eight-time world heavyweight champion Harley Race…

PETA protest is a house of lies and animal rights

Today’s PETA protest at the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain was based on lies. The press release clearly promised “Naked behind a banner that reads, ‘Meat’s Not Green,’ two PETA beauties will shower together at a busy Kansas City location to let consumers know that the best thing they can do for the environment is to go vegetarian.” The young women …

ACLU says KCPD math doesn’t add up

When the Kansas City Police Department decided to eliminate domestic partner benefits for its members, an internal memo emphasized that the cut would hurt only eight employees and save a much-needed $421,000 in a tight budget year. That statistic didn’t sit right with a coalition of local civil rights’ groups, including the ACLU and PROMO. How could one person’s health…

Tackiest robbery ever solved

www.spoilurpets.com You might remember the story in February about a 64-year-old Kansas City businessman who claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint of $300,000 in dog jewelry while on a business trip to Colorado. Well, we can all rest easy now. The good men and women of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation have cracked the case. Categories: News Tags: alabama,…

Bye bye, No. 88

Tony Gonzalez is head to Hot-lanta and as a co-worker told me, Kansas City just got 88 percent less hot. But it’s a matter of perception. People, of the anonymous sort, aren’t saying too many kind things about Tony G. on The Dirty. But local charities are weeping at the loss of Gonzales, who donated a lot of his time…

1,000 brown M&M’s

Rock n’ roll riders — the contract demands that artists make for concerts — have become the stuff of legend. The Smoking Gun recently got its hands on by far the most famous rider of all time, Van Halen’s. As the 52-page document proves, sometimes legend is true. The band did indeed have a line asking for a bowl of…

Killa City: Jamaal V. Dixon accused of killing Rashad Taylor

An argument between teens over a girl ended with Jamaal V. Dixon fatally shooting Rashad J. Taylor and wounding Taylor’s brother, Rodte Taylor, police allege. Jackson County prosecutors charged 19-year-old Dixon yesterday with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. Court records say Dixon approached Rodte Taylor Tuesday night inside the Express Mart at 7007 Longview…
