Bacon gives you another reason to drink

I don’t need to preach about the greatness of bacon — it seems every new product or Web site is already doing so. It’s to the point that I’m suffering from bacon fatigue. In February I called bacon mania ridiculous, and since then we’ve seen the porkgasm, Stonehenge recreated with Twinkies and bacon, and the bacon explosion inventors get a…

Langston Hughes, meet Crosby Kemper: A review

Yesterday afternoon, about three hours before the cameras went on, I spotted Crosby Kemper III sitting at his usual table overlooking the Central Library’s Nine Muses Café. Legs crossed. Eyes pitched down at some reading. I figured he must be cramming some last minutes facts about his first interview subject for the KCPT Channel 19-produced series, Meet the Past With…

Midtown Miscreant leaves midtown …

Midtown Miscreant (Mark Smith) is leaving midtown … “for good.” The Miscreant is moving about 15 minutes away, staying in the metro area. Midtown has changed a lot, and it’s not the same for the guy. But he files a great post about what midtown used to be like when he was a kid. Main Street jumped and crackled at…

Non-drinkers: bars’ new best customers?

Because I’m a good friend, I’ve spent my share of nights at bars sipping on coffee, soda or mostly water trying to enjoy drunk people as much a sober person can. Being a designated driver has one major upside — safety — but some minor drawbacks, one of which is limited drink choices. Many bars are trying to change that,…

Reporter’s Notebook: Checking campaign contributions in 4 easy steps

I started working on this week’s cover story, “The Cure from Kansas,” after discovering how much Big Healthcare money was pouring into the campaign fund of Kansas Rep. Brenda Landwehr, a Wichita Republican who heads the House Health and Human Services Committee. Landwehr’s committee had proposed a particularly inhumane piece of legislation that made me wonder WTF they were thinking….

Another round of layoffs coming at the Star?

McClatchy Watch reported today that another round of layoffs could be coming at McClatchy, the parent company of The Kansas City Star, in June if the newspaper chain violates its debt covenants. But that’s not all: Look for asset sales. Expect McClatchy to sell buildings and lease them back. And as more employees are laid off, the value of the…

Pistachio recall expands (plus conspiracy theory)

The two million pounds of pistachios recalled last week weren’t enough. Now that number has doubled. California-based Setton can’t rule out the possibility of salmonella in its entire 2008 crop, so it’s recalling all roasted pistachios and raw shelled ones. Previously only in-shell roasted ones were recalled. (Got that straight?) The FDA’s Web site keeps adding recalled “pistachio-containing products.” When…

Denny’s continues to give away free food

Bill Maher once said that bacon, eggs and cheese between two waffles isn’t a breakfast, it’s a suicide attempt. I wonder what he would think of Denny’s newest creation, the grand slamwich, which the restaurant is now giving away free. (Don’t rush off yet, there are restrictions.) Denny’s calls the grand slamwich “everything you love about the grand slam, now…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, 4/08

%{}% That new yogurt shop Mochi-Yo really knows how to guerrilla market itself. In what is virtually the only bright spot in travel, gay tourism is still strong and cities are fighting to get the business. It’s a pretty well-known fact that Americans consume more calories than they did 20 years ago. But did you know the extra 200 calories…

Daily Briefs: Paul McCartney has heard of this “Internet.”

%{}% Being For The Benefit of Mr. McCartney: FYI BEATLES FANS, the music industry has been consistently releasing non-Beatles music for the last 40 years, and is probably going to continue doing so in the future! You might look into some. But I assume that there’s somebody out there, such as your Nana or smelly old Jimmy Carter, who still…

Welcome back, Michael Vick

%{}% Dogfighting impresario Michael Vick can resume the custodial arts. A federal judge ordered the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback to return to Leavenworth’s federal penitentiary after rejecting Vick’s bankruptcy plan. The judge doesn’t sound too impressed with Vick’s plan to pay off his creditors, especially when the only work that Vick can count on is a $10-an-hour job working construction….

Royals lose season opener

The New York Times may have picked the Royals to win their division (no, the Times really did), but the boys in blue are already in the hole after losing the season opener to the Chicago White Sox. Thanks, Trey Hillman. Thanks, Kyle Farnsworth. This one’s on you guys. For more insight, check out Royales with Cheese, a newish blog covering…

Concert Review: Morrissey, April 7, 2009, at the Midland

“Can you stand it?” Morrissey asks his fans. Oh, they most certainly bloody can. Moz was slightly more talkative and frisky than he was at his last show in KC, in 2007. Though the show ran mostly seamlessly from one big, chugging misery ode to the next, the 50-year-old self-loathing charmer did parley a bit with the not-small but not-sold-out…

Question: Stephenson’s Old Apple Farm Products

Flicker: Una Bella Mondo I received an e-mail from Linda, a reader in Dallas, Texas, who wrote: “I was trying to find something…about Stephenson’s Old Apple Farm. I’ve been going there all my life and we used to go there on our travels at least two or more times a year. Oh, how we miss it. I wondered if they are selling…

Two big, bouncy ways to save journalism

The staff of our former Bay Area sister paper, the East Bay Express, has a pretty great idea of how to save journalism. Actually, two of them. But it doesn’t look like they’re taking their own advice yet. The Express’ (boob-free) Web site has a familiar name on the masthead: Hal Brody. Brody, the Express’ independent owner and operator, owned…

Five-day forecast of shame for Fox 4 weather man

Mike Thompson You might remember last year when Fox 4’s chief meteorologist Mike Thompson compared environmentalists to Hitler’s disciples. Well, if being called a genocidal maniac pissed you off, too bad, hippie. Because Mike Thompson has God’s word that he’s right. Thompson has been taking his admonishments to the pews of metro churches, including St. Joseph’s in Shawnee, where he’s a member. Recently, a friend of the Plog…

The Rhonda Chriss Lokeman DUI video, part V

Here’s the final set of videos of Rhonda Chriss Lokeman’s wild night. This footage takes place after Star publisher Mark Zieman has discussed the bail-out process with the arresting officer, but before he can pick her up at the jail. In this video, we see Lokeman inexplicably speaking Italian. On this ride to jail, she’s joined by two other scofflaws…
