‘Head of spirit’ at UMKC says age led to her firing

A lawsuit filed by the former “head of spirit” at the University of Missouri-Kansas City accuses the Athletics Department of age discrimination. Tim Hall, the director of the department, fired Theresa Freeman in October 2007. Freeman, who is 47, went to work at UMKC in 2001. Freeman says Hall screamed and yelled at her a month before her dismissal. Hall…

Rock Out Reach Out at Crosstown Station

The Center for Justice and Sustainability at William Jewell College held a benefit for local charities and invited Namelessnumberheadman, Pet Comfort and the Abracadabras.

The police will not tolerate your marijuana enthusiasm

The Kansas City Police Department knows that today is a “day known as a holiday in the drug culture.” We’re sure your attention’s probably already wandering, hippies, but if you can keep it together long enough to finish this post you’ll be glad you did. Ok. Today the KCPD will be coordinating with other police departments to monitor metro roads…

Killa City: Police name victims of weekend double homicide

Kansas City police released the names of two weekend homicide victims: 23-year-old Andrew J. Eli of Kansas City, Missouri, and 24-year-old Justin K. Budreau of Shawnee, Kansas. Kansas City police officers on a routine patrol Saturday afternoon heard gunshots in the 1300 block of East 59th Street. View Larger Map Witnesses told police that they also heard shots fired and…

The Give-a-Shit List

This week: Celebrate Earth Day in the cinema, the public forum or out in the field; get schooled by local and national experts on how to stem the foreclosure hemorrhaging; be part of the dedication of Precious Doe Memorial Park; and hear the thoughts of a now-famous mom who’s still rallying activists against the Iraq war years after her son’s…

East Side Story: Niecie’s Restaurant

So, inquiring minds want to know, just when is Niecie’s Restaurant — the popular Eastside diner that serves Southern-style home cooking at 5932 Prospect — moving into its new digs at 6441 Troost? Construction has been steadily moving along at the old Pizza Hut building for many months and the new sign is up, but the doors are still boarded…

A good night out at Crosstown, starring the Sons of Great Dane, Adam Lee & the Dead Horse Sound Company and Calamity Cubes

Damn. Just when you think there’s nothing new under the sun, you go out on a random weeknight and get blown away by brand-new local bands. Last night at Crosstown Station, the Sons of Great Dane, Adam Lee and the Dead Horse Sound Company and the Calamity Cubes formed a rockin’, honky tonkin’, bluegrass stompin’ lineup that reminded me why…

Porn fight!

About a year and a half ago, I wrote about anti-porn crusaders going after the Lion’s Den Adult Superstore (“Sex Police,” October 24, 2007) in Abilene, Kansas. Now, the Lion’s Den is suing the state of Kansas over a statute that would stop adult bookstore’s from advertising on billboards near the state’s highways. The Lion’s Den has a history of…

Queen of All Media conquers your gold, extends reign

It’d be forgivable if you rushed to change the channel the next time the latest WeNeedGold.com television spot came on. It is a souless thing, even more offensive for containing a catchy jingle you won’t be able to force out of your mind despite its awfulness. But don’t change it! Look past that pro-tooled white businessman rapper to the old lady spinning at the…

March 2 sucked for everyone

Yesterday, the Kansas City Police Department released a report on the accident exonerating the Kansas City Fire Department in the death of 7-year-old Obarimomoya Nkani, who was hit and killed by a fire truck answering a call on March 2. View Larger Map The Nkani family had raised questions as to whether the pumper’s lights and sirens were on when…

Incoming: Children of Bodom at the Uptown

Finland’s best metal band will be drinking blood from your mom’s hollowed-out skull Saturday, April 29, at the Uptown. Metaphorically speaking. Children of Bodom is a Finnish metal band that’s been around since 1993. They took their name from a multiple homicide in the 1960s at Finnland’s Lake Bodom, which I guess was big news over there. Frontman Alexi Laiho is their draw…

New Jarvis Cocker MP3, “Angela”

Dashing, witty Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker is coming out with Further Complications on May 19. Grab the fist single — a stripped, raw nerve groover that sounds almost Smithereensy — below, just posted today at MBV. Hat tip to Annie Z. for the song, and much love to all you Angelas of the world out there keepin’ it real on…

Pizza Fusion celebrates Earth Week

Pizza Fusion’s motto is “saving the Earth one pizza at a time,” which the environmentally conscious chain is trying to accomplish by opening all over the Earth. There are even locations in the less-than-eco-friendly Saudi Arabia. (I suggest they stay away from Dubai all together.) Back in the good ol’ green USA, the paint is barely dry on its Leawood…

Fat City book club

A couple of interesting food-related books are coming out soon. The first is Food of a Younger Land by Mark Kurlansky, who has written books about oysters, cod and salt. While poking around the Library of Congress, Kurlansky discovered a forgotten work that was part of the Federal Writers’ Project of the 1930s. To keep writers busy, the government sent…

This band is Cookin’

If any area band was ever worthy of some free promotion, it’s this group of slightly, *cough*, older Missourians clearly having the time of their lives — not only while playing music but while Photoshopping, too. Without further ado, Kansas City, it’s time to get … COOKIN’ Starring … Categories: Music Tags: Cookin, cover songs, dreamcatchers, MP3, southwestern motifs, Sugar…

Recession Relief: M&S Grill

I couldn’t mention the new summer drink menu at M&S Grill without mentioning one of the best things about the restaurant — happy hour. Its menu bills it as the “best happy hour this end of the Plaza!” but that’s selling itself short. The menu is set up in four $1 increments starting at $1.95. For that, you get a…

Auggie and me

Along with about 25 other people, I shuffled into an AMC theater last night to watch the wanna-be cause-celebre movie Beer Wars. People hoping for a first-rate bashing of big business and big beer were not disappointed. From the opening moment, director Anat Baron had Miller, Coors and especially Anheuser-Busch in her bullseye. In an effort to save memory space,…

Health-care rally tomorrow

Hey, if thousands of pissed-off teabaggers can rally for no reason other than to gripe about taxes, anyone who worries about how much the healthcare system is jacking with our economy might want to head for a rally tomorrow put on by Heartland Healthcare for All. Heartland Healthcare for All describes itself as “a group of community members, doctors, medical…

Don’t forget, Monday is a holiday

A lot of people observe 4/20 every day, uh, at 4:20, so I wouldn’t call Monday special. But the pot smokers’ holiday is rapidly approaching and I’ve yet to get all of my shopping done. I might just skip it thanks to Fox 4’s lame-ass report that acts like no one has ever heard of 4:20 or its “hidden meaning.”…

Now open: Manifesto

If speakeasies are supposed to be hard to get into, then Manifesto wins. I knew the recently opened bar was located directly below 1924 Main and that you’re supposed to go around the back to enter. What I didn’t know was the access code for the keypad on the door, or which suite number to dial. Turns out there is…
