This Is Why You’re Fat’s more literary cousin

I’ve noticed a lot of blogs and twitters (yeah I’m cool like that) linking to the Web site This Is Why You’re Fat. While I commend TIWYF for pictures that raise cholesterol just looking at them, I was disappointed that it really is just food porn. And not attractive food porn. My personal definition of food porn is “a picture…

CD Review: The Dead Girls’ Hair Trigger EP (MP3 enhanced)

The Dead Girls, The Hair Trigger EP (self-released) It seems Lawrence’s the Dead Girls (formerly Dead Girls Ruin Everything) have already taken Obama’s message of change to heart. Most obvious, of course, is the lopped-off moniker, but perhaps more significant is the Hair Trigger EP, the band’s first album in three years, and the first of three planned releases for…

VDay minus three: the bar on Valentine’s

In her book Garlic and Sapphires, food critic Ruth Reichl talks about her terrible visits to one of New York’s priciest restaurants called the Box Tree. The food was crap, the hostess mean. While Reichl grows angry with her service, she notices a young, cheaply clothed couple looking sad. She asks them some questions and quickly learns they’ve been saving…

Dog Patch fire board members fight over something …

Damn. Fox 4 is kinda interesting. Reporter Rob Low has been following the fighting hill folk of the Inner-City Fire District. The fighting hill folk expertly represent beautiful shanty town Blue Summit, aka “Dog Patch,” aka the home of totally not-sexy adult bookstore and knife shop Erotic City. From what I can make out through the shouting, the only tornado…

Will Nature’s Pride save IBC?

The last couple of years have not been kind to the Interstate Bakeries Corporation. IBC, headquartered on east Armour Road in Kansas City, Missouri, has been in bankruptcy since 2004 and its two iconic products, Wonder Bread and Twinkies, aren’t exactly en vogue among health-conscious shoppers. To celebrate its emergence from bankruptcy — and to try and woo those aforementioned…

The new China Syndrome

Everything is hunky dory in China! Or not. Actually, I’m guessing not based on the title of the speech by noted policy expert Marion Nestle at the Plaza Library tonight at 6:30. The speech is called “Red Scare: China and the New Global Food System.” Nestle is a Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health at New York University….

Adieu, Harrah’s Lucky Break, adieu.

Bottom Line Communications has with sweet sorrow reported that your mom’s favorite show, Harrah’s Lucky Break, has been canceled. According to Bottom Lines, the Idol-style talent show, which was filmed on Tuesdays inside of Toby Keith’s Unbearable Lightness of Being at this Bar and Grill at Harrah’s Casino in North Kansas City and broadcast on Saturday nights on KMBC, was…

Now Open: Cupcake A La Mode

Lisa Clark is a mother of three children, including a nine-month-old. That’s enough work for anyone, but Clark is also the owner/baker/main employee of Cupcake a la Mode at 1209 West 47th Street, five blocks west of the Country Club Plaza. I asked Clark when she sleeps, and she just laughed. She soft-opened Cupcake a la Mode 20 days ago…

KCPD sergeant suspected of driving drunk

As the KCPD’s sobriety checkpoints get more surprise-y this weekend, one of their own is suspected of driving drunk. KCTV-5 reports that an off-duty sergeant was arrested early Saturday morning for driving under the influence. The sergeant, a 20-year veteran of the force, hasn’t been charged, so KCTV didn’t release his name. Be careful out there. Categories: News Tags: duis,…

The Download: Live Walkmen Set

We might have to wait a while for the next release from the Walkmen, but who can blame them? You & Me was the NYC act’s most commercially successful album, and deservedly so. The band announced last Friday that it will be touring the east coast with Kings of Leon starting in April, but if a road trip isn’t in…

Daily Briefs: Sorry about your testicles, pothead.

%{}% In a disturbingly specific instance of anatomical and fiduciary braggadocio, rapper Mase said “I’m young, black and famous / with money hangin’ out the anus” in the song “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down.” Weird, but truly aspirational for a man like me, who is barely a hundredaire. I, too, would like to have money “hangin’ out the anus.” Meanwhile,…

Army recruiters plagued by fat kids

Lieutenant Colonel Eric Reinkober, the head dude at the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion Kansas City office, hates the term “Army Fat Camp.” But he grudgingly admits that, because of America’s ever-plumping obesity problem, the upper echelons of the U.S. military have started discussing the possibility of creating a special program within basic training for recruits who come in a little…

Hardcore at 54

Seka Valentine’s Day is upon us. It’s a certainty in the same way that pizzas delivered to rich housewives by attractive young men will remain cold and uneaten. So we thought it was time to check in with the KC resident who knows the most about the many physical expressions of lovemaking. Even though she’s well into her 50s, Seka still has more…

BPU meets with EPA about alleged clean air violations (updated)

Last week, attorneys from the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities and Environmental Protection Agency met to discuss the notice of violations the EPA sent in November to the BPU. The notice basically said the long-troubled utility company could face millions of dollars in fines for violating federal clean air standards. Chris Whitley, a spokesman for EPA Region 7,…

Olathe’s iResQ shows its dark side, woman charges; UPDATE: case closed

Friendly Midwestern success story iResQ, the Apple-authorized repair center in south Olathe, fixes iPhones and iPods but may have a tough time fixing its reputation in the almighty blogosphere. In the wee hours this morning, the influential Web site BoingBoing — a kind of think tank devoted to epic geek time wasting — linked to a Sacramento, California, blogger accusing…

Did Bryan Stevenson just say “War of Northern Aggression”?

I do believe that Missouri state Rep. Bryan Stevenson just stuck up for the Confederacy while speaking in favor of a House resolution asking the U.S. Congress to stand against the federal Freedom of Choice Act — a bill that hasn’t been filed but would stop the government from interfering with abortion. And then apologized. That was quick. And strange….
