Community Manager

The Pitch is seeking a Community Manager that loves this city just as much as we do and is excited to grow our membership while building community around our publication and events. The Community Manager will be an audience engagement aficionado with the ability to multitask between big-picture projects/strategy and everyday execution.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Rebranding and launching 2022-2023 membership campaign with Director of Strategy
  • Maintaining a social posting schedule advertising membership
  • Overseeing production of membership house ads for print with remote designer
  • Researching and writing monthly Behind the Scenes newsletter for members
  • Curating giveaway items twice monthly and managing membership giveaway process
  • Managing membership subscription requests
  • Writing engaging daily editorial newsletters Monday-Thursday (Calendar, Insider, Dish & Drink, Culture)
  • Responding to comments and messages across social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working in audience engagement or membership management programs; experience with print magazines is a plus. Familiarity with Mailchimp, social media trends, and social media algorithms will be highly beneficial. The ideal candidate will also be able to write sharp and snappy copy in the Pitch voice that communicates enthusiastically with our readership and members. If this isn’t your current skill set, but you’re a motivated self-starter excited to learn, or you feel that you have transferable skills, we’d still love to hear from you.

This position is a minimum of 25 hours per week with an hourly wage between $20 and $30 depending on experience. Applicants must be based in the Kansas City area and available for in-office work when necessary. The position will be hybrid in-person and remote depending on COVID safety concerns, but will ultimately be in-office for all working hours. There will also be the opportunity to transition to a full-time position based on performance.

Part-Time Assistant Editor

The Pitch is seeking a Part-Time Assistant Editor who will help us polish our pieces to perfection, improve the look of articles on our website, and advance our editorial vision as we grow under a new ownership team. The Part-Time Assistant Editor will report to the Editor-in-Chief.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Copyediting and proofreading digital stories on a daily basis
  • Building and scheduling magazine pieces in WordPress for online publication
  • Copyediting magazine stories during monthly deadlines
  • Developing and scheduling weekly freelance emails with stories/topics editorial wants covered in collaboration with Editor-in-Chief
  • Working with and mentoring primary staff writer
  • Producing infographics for stories using infographics software
  • Journalism writing experience a plus

The ideal candidate will have their finger on the pulse of news and culture in Kansas City. They will also have a strong working knowledge of AP Style, copyediting and proofreading experience, and an enthusiasm for learning new software that maximizes the quality of digital stories. Applicants must be based in the Kansas City area and available for in-office work during print magazine deadlines.

This position is a minimum of 20 hours per week with an hourly wage of $20. Within this position, there is the opportunity to pitch the Editor-in-Chief directly and receive priority for covering stories, with an emphasis on features and profiles. Stories would be written outside of the 20 working hours and compensated with additional freelance pay. This position can be hybrid in-person and remote depending on COVID safety concerns.
