The Pitch is looking for curious, story-hungry editorial interns for the summer session of 2025.

Candidates should be college juniors, seniors, or recent graduates looking for experience. We want journalists and writers with unlimited curiosity who want to expand their portfolio into news, arts, dining, and culture coverage.

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing digital stories for thepitchkc.com
  • Pitching story ideas to Editor-in-Chief of The Pitch for print or online
  • Completing one longer feature with research and interviews for consideration for magazine publication
  • Interviewing members of the community
  • Covering live events
  • Working closely with editor to improve writing and expand horizons and portfolio
  • Building multimedia stories for online release
  • Setting measurable improvement end-goals for internship experience

The internship comes with a stipend and college credit where applicable. Intern should be working in office or online between 15 and 20 hours per week. Kansas City local applicants preferred.

Previous interns have completed the program and used their expanded portfolio to secure full-time work with USA Today, People, Time, NPR, Spin, Rolling Stone, ESPN, Smithsonian Magazine, KCUR, The Star, and even The Pitch. Featured stories from editorial interns include in-depth investigations [KC’s houseless resettlement experimentation], expansive profiles [magazine cover story Left Hooks and Lowriders], important political issues [police training disconnect], and fascinating local curiosities [magazine cover story Pink Street Paranormal].

The internship comes with a paid stipend and college credit where applicable.
