Kris Kobach still wants to push forward with Kansas immigration legislation

Kris Kobach believes immigration regulation could move forward in Kansas and Missouri. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down three of the four challenged provisions of the Arizona immigration law apparently won’t stop Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach from heading back to the old turkey blind and potentially drafting some new legislation. Kobach, who consults with states on…

Listen Before the Show: The Mynabirds

The title track to the Mynabirds’ new album on Saddle Creek, General, is currently my favorite song. Stomping, dark, sweaty, and just a twinge dirty, it’s perfectly suited for the sweltering bit of miserable we’re currently experiencing. For those who loved the Mynabirds’ folksy debut, this will scare the shit out of you. For those who lean more toward the…

Who makes the best cup of iced tea in the city?

Grocery Story Challenge Iced tea is a summer drink for a reason. When the weather reaches triple digits, my reptilian brain craves iced tea. This is why I would have never made it as a caveman. While others hunkered down in caves or actually hunted, I would have been out picking mint and lavender. I’m partial to unsweetened, but in…

The English Beat’s Dave Wakeling on the band’s new box set

Jackie Butler Dave Wakeling, frontman for the long-running 2-Tone ska act the English Beat, is not a man who’s afraid of the past. He reunited the Beat in 2003, and the group’s been making summer tours of the United States a regular deal for the past few years. That revived interest in the band has led to the forthcoming release…

My short, happy life as a vegetarian

barry.pousman Yes, man can survive on veggie burgers and iced mead. Writing about the new Cafe Gratitude and its affirmation-heavy, hippie-dippy vibe brought back all kinds of memories for me about the cute little macrobiotic restaurant in Indianapolis where I worked as a waiter in the early 1980s. It was a combination folky art gallery and dining room operated –…

The Flaming Lips circus, last night at Liberty Hall

I was pretty convinced that the Flaming Lips weren’t going to be able to bring their well-known, massive stage show inside Liberty Hall. I mean, c’mon – it’s a huge, festival-style behemoth, and Liberty Hall is proudly a lovely, now century-old, small-town opera house. But I was wrong – there it was onstage, the story-tall LED oval from Wakarusas and…
