Emanuel Cleaver won’t leg go of his ‘sugarcoated Satan sandwich’ statement

Emanuel Cleaver refuses to eat his lunch. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver really must think he has hit on something special with his “sugarcoated Satan sandwich” reference to the debt ceiling deal. Cleaver, in his e-newsletter, writes that he “will call a Satan Sandwich like I see it, but I will never call another person by that name.” Thanks for the clarification….

Kanrocksas, Day Two: Saturday at the Speedway

Brooke Vandever Girl Talk An aural and visual feast for the 30,000-plus fans who made it out to KCK on Friday and Saturday, Kanrocksas was a well-executed affair. For $99 for one-day passes and $179 for two-day passes, festivalgoers got what they paid for and more. Because there was just so much going on, I decided to do my breakdown…

Kansas City Royals tarp crew member almost gets rolled (video)

A member of the Kansas City Royals’ ground crew was nearly steamrolled as his team laid down a tarp on the field during yesterday’s rain delay (the Royals went on to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3). Watch the video above to see the man roll over the tarp and then try to keep from getting squished. H/t: Deadspin. Categories: News…

Who would you pay to dine with in Kansas City?

Money may not buy you happiness, but it could improve who is sitting across from you at dinner. Zaarly, the locally based online marketplace/delivery website team, is hoping that somebody can hook them up with Mayor Sly James for a dinner at Skies, and they’re willing to drop a cool $100 on that request. If you’ve got a hook-up at…

Kanrocksas, Day One: Observations

Brooke Vandever I wrote about Kanrocksas in the July 28 issue — the people behind it, how it came to be, who came up with the terrible name, what kind of venue a speedway might make for a music festival. On Friday, I got in my car and drove 20 minutes west on I-70, exited, steered around a few bends,…

Sam Brownback vacations at Texas governor’s prayer rally; IHOP’s Mike Bickle says ‘there is no other God other than Jesus’

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s “vacation” led him to Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s “The Response” prayer rally in Houston on Saturday. Brownback prayed (skip to the 2:12 mark of the video to see him pray) and fasted (he’s also not eating in the video, so I guess he’s fasting, too). Brownback’s press people sent out a press release Saturday titled “Governor:…

Glace is now open at One Nineteen in Leawood

Glace Artisan Ice Cream opened in Leawood Friday night at the One Nineteen shopping center (4535 W. 119th St.). “We had lots of customers from Leawood driving to our shop on Main,” owner and chocolatier Christopher Elbow says, “but a lot of people don’t want to drive 30 minutes for ice cream.” So he brought the shop to them. Glace…

Free cats! Come and get your free cats

You can’t beat free felines. The Heartland SPCA is giving away cats, including kittens, all month long. The Merriam animal shelter formerly known as Animal Haven has so many cats that it’s waiving the adoption fee. Your new kitty comes microchipped, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and examined by a vet. You’ll also get a month’s worth of pet insurance. All…

Death at Kanrocksas

The KCK Fire Department was called to the Kanrocksas campgrounds this morning to investigate an unresponsive person, who was then pronounced dead on the scene, reports KMBC. Apparently the man was in his 20s, which sounds like an overdose or maybe dehydration. More as we hear it. If you’re headed out today, drink a bunch of water and be careful….

Liquor board votes to revoke license of Club Xpressions

Xpressions is open — for now. After listening to nine hours of testimony on Thursday, the Liquor Control Board of Review voted to revoke the license of Club Xpressions at 220 Admiral Boulevard. The license changed hands late last year, but new management was not sufficient for city officials, who fined and suspended the previous operator of a nightclub at…

Cafe Seed changes hours, plans dinner theater

Cafe Seed is now open only three days a week. Yes, Cafe Seed — the cozy little vegan restaurant at 2932 Cherry — is still in business. If the “Closed” sign in the window seems to be posted more frequently, it’s because the restaurant has changed its business hours. The new hours for the restaurant are 11 a.m. to 4…

Photo of Peter Kinder with former Penthouse Pet surfaces

Man-about-Missouri Peter Kinder makes a friend. Well, this won’t help Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder shake the perception that he’s too big of a doofus to be Missouri’s next governor. Our pals at The Riverfront Times posted a photo of a man who sure looks like Kinder saying cheese with a woman who was a Penthouse Pet of the Month in…

Mayor Sly James’ son refuses to pay tab at Power & Light, threatens cop’s job and talks ‘sweet sixth-grade pussy’

Mayor Sly James is sorry his son was embarrassing. Mayor Sly James’ son was allegedly acting like a dick in the Power & Light District last weekend. The Kansas City Star reported that 22-year-old Kyle James caused a ruckus at Fran’s Restaurant early Saturday morning, refusing to pay for food that he ordered (but didn’t eat) and threatening the job…

You should totally buy a laptop and socks this weekend

School supply purchases will go untaxed this weekend This weekend would be a good time to update your underwear drawer or replace the laptop with the lunatic hard drive. Certain items of clothing, school supplies and computers are exempt from sales taxes in Missouri on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The three-day, back-to-school sales tax holiday is a product of state…

Naked man wanted to float to the Library of Congress

The Missouri River won’t get you here. I’m not great with geography (or math), but I’m pretty sure you can’t float to the Library of Congress via the Missouri River. But that didn’t stop a naked man from trying to make the more than 1,000-mile journey Thursday morning. (Google maps doesn’t offer a route via the mighty Missouri.) Fox 4…
