Guy proposing at KCI unknowingly pops the question on live TV

When you work in journalism, sometimes a good story falls in your lap. KMBC’s Brenda Washington proved that a few days ago when a man accidentally proposed to his girlfriend in the background of Washington’s live shot at KCI. Washington was reporting on the rather bland subject of the cost of healthy eating and went to the airport to do…

Urban Table’s pork schnitzel is a good piece of pig

The pork tenderloin’s days may be numbered if Urban Table (8232 Mission) keeps knocking out sandwiches like its pork schnitzel. The Prairie Village restaurant, the latest from Bread & Butter Concepts (the team behind BRGR), opened on Monday, August 1, in Corinth Square. Charlotte Disapproves Where will you wait? Sometimes it feels like everyone gets a hankering for the same dish at the same time. But when the wait is close to an hour, suddenly that clever thought you had for dinner on Friday night seems a lot less clever. You can send free copies of Slaughterhouse-Five to Republic High students

Wesley Scroggins just got 150 kids free copies of the Devil’s handbook Missouri once again made the worst kind of national headlines this July when the story broke that Republic High’s school board had banned Kurt Vonnegut’s WWII classic Slaughterhouse-Five and Sarah Ockler’s novel Twenty Boy Summer because a district parent complained that the material was “biblically contrary.” The added…

Which water would you prefer? Sparkling, still or…tap?

Flickr/Fillmore Photography My newest restaurant pet peeve? Asking for a glass of water — not an unlikely request lately — and having a server respond, “Would you like sparkling, still or …tap.” The final word is often uttered in the same tone one might use to describe a dead mouse. A withering disdain. This drives a friend of mine mad:…

A brand-new life for 600 Ward Parkway

The once-popular Baja 600 patio is getting a serious face-lift. Until the 1980s, there was a gas station at 600 Ward Parkway. It was torn down in the mid-’80s to build the domed structure that opened as the Parkway 600 restaurant in 1987. In the late 1990s, the building underwent renovations and reopened as the Pacific Rim-themed restaurant Japengo. In…
