GQ: Kansas City is the 37th worst-dressed city in America

Time for some more meaningless rankings. GQ magazine (yes, they still print it) says Kansas City, Missouri, is the 37th worst dressed city in America. Why are Kansas City’s men so poorly dressed? Here’s GQ’s Christoper Swetala: “How does a city that fathered its own style of jazz back in the 1930s dress with such little manly swagger? Yeah, you’re…

Blind Pilot and Mountain Man, last night at the Bottleneck

Whenever I want to feel old, it’s always good to go see a show in Lawrence, particularly at the Bottleneck. It’s kind of nice, though, to see that kids still wait patiently for a show to start, sitting on the edge of the stage with X’s on their hands. If nothing else, it means a shorter line at the bar…

Local label Emptyland Records recently posted a free compilation for download. Entitled Underground Artists Vol.1, the comp gathers together unreleased tracks from the Leotards (featuring author Iain Ellis on vox in his King Tosser guise) and d-beat maestros Methhorse, as well as previously released tunes from the likes of Der Todesking, among others. You can either download it at this…

Baker said during a press conference that the gun used in the shooting belongs to Sullivan. No charges have been filed against the other three men who fired the gun. Baker also advocated…

Overheard at Zaina: The falafel is addictive

The lunch line was steady but moving quickly at Zaina (25 East 12th Street) yesterday. And each person who stepped up to the counter had a chance to parlay with Joe Semaan. His banter is as charming as the food at the downtown Mediterranean restaurant.  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink Tags: zaina

Cynthia Davis is still one of the ‘Worst Persons in the World’ (video)

My favorite former Missouri lawmaker, O’Fallon loon Cynthia Davis, made a repeat appearance on Countdown host Keith Olbermann’s “Worst Persons in the World” list Wednesday night. Davis didn’t do anything quite as noteworthy as arguing hunger can motivate poor children to get jobs at McDonald’s, where they can eat for free during their breaks (she was arguing against taxpayer-supported summer-food…

It’s raining Guys and Dolls at Starlight

What’s playing at Starlight? I’ll tell you what’s playing at Starlight. Has any couple onstage been more star-crossed than Sarah Brown, the uptight Skid Row missionary with God in her heart, and Sky Masterson, the upright golden boy with gambling in his heart? Unlike Romeo and Juliet, whose families’ enmity makes their love impossible, Sarah and Sky are separated by…

Raytown School District to test high school students for drugs

Raytown School District high school kids better get ready to start peeing in cups. In September, the district will become the first in the Kansas City area to start randomly testing students for drugs, after the board of education voted 6-0 on Monday to approve testing, according to The Kansas City Star. But not all students will have to agree…

The WWF Championship is tattooed on Justin Deming’s stomach (photo)

I love pro wrestling. I started watching it in the mid-’80s and never stopped watching (I’ll be throwing a party Sunday night and watching CM Punk win the WWE title from John Cena). But I’m not this big of a fan. The photo above is of Justin Deming’s stomach. He’s from St. Louis, and yes, that’s the WWF Championship tattooed…

Celebrate Bastille Day tomorrow!

Tomorrow — July 14 — marks the 222nd anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison and fortress in Paris, an event later acknowledged as the symbolic beginning of the French revolution. An important holiday in France, Bastille Day warrants a few local celebrations, too. Tannin Wine Bar at 1526 Walnut still has seats available for the Bastille Day Wine…
