Dodos are coming back to town again in September

The Dodos must seriously like the Kansas City area. Just last year, the band opened for Neko Case at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas, and back in March, the group played RecordBar in Kansas City, Missouri. The guitar-and-tons-of-percussion band will now play the Bottleneck on September 25. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show is all-ages. Tickets cost $12-$14. The Luyas…

Kansas City Chiefs’ Leonard Pope talks about saving 6-year-old boy from drowning (video)

Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Leonard Pope saved a 6-year-old boy from drowning on Saturday. Pope spoke with ESPN about the rescue, and interviewer Reischea Canidate awkwardly referenced Mariah Carey’s song “Hero” (via Deadspin). Pope also told the story on the NFL Network Monday night (the video isn’t embeddable but you can watch it by clicking here). In a surprise…

Franks, a hot-dog restaurant, to open in the West Bottoms

Whether it’s the next food trend in the city or the correction of a hole in our culinary repertoire, this might end up being the year of the hot dog. The Kansas City Star reported yesterday that Franks, a dress-your-own hot-dog joint, will be opening in the West Bottoms. Restaurateur Dan Clothier is renovating the space at 1623 Genessee, right…

Elana James of the Hot Club of Cowtown on What Makes Bob Holler

Kansas City native Elana James has been singing and fiddling with western swing trio the Hot Club of Cowtown for more than 15 years. In that time, the Austin-based group has recorded numerous albums, including the boisterous live album Continental Stomp, as well as a recent selection of Bob Wills’ tunes, What Makes Bob Holler. This is to say nothing…

Midtown developer Brent Lambi resurfaces, settles lawsuit with former lover

The Katz Drug building, which serves as an unofficial gateway to Westport, is for sale. The Art Deco landmark on Main Street, empty since 2006, will be sold at an auction on August 11. Midtown developer Brent Lambi bought the building in 2009. At the time, he was contemplating a $27-million redevelopment plan encompassing several blocks. He filed an application…

Teens face murder charges as adults for allegedly killing Monte Wedd over gun sale

Two teens are facing murder charges as adults after allegedly killing 17-year-old Monte Wedd at 44th and Agnes on March 26. Last week, Jackson County prosecutors charged 16-year-olds Derrick Frencher and Darian Pulce-Nugent with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. Court records say Pulce-Nugent was so proud of the killing that he bragged in a…

Out of Time & Space Astrology

Love Songs Theme Week (Read Scorpio first.) Gemini/Gemini Rising* (May 21-Jun 20): Don’t want little man artist formally known as Prince now known as a fundamentalist Christian coming after me. I found a live song after his conversion to being a JW that is worth everything (I admit I have been a bit obsessed with his creativity, or lack thereof)….

Lawrence O’Donnell slaps down Vicky Hartzler’s hypocrisy on farm subsidies

If there’s one thing we know for sure about Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-Hypocrisyville), it’s that she hearts her some farm subsidies. My colleague David Martin has hit her for it in the past (here, here and here, at least), and now MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell is also criticizing homophobe Hartzler’s socialism-lovin’ ways. H/t: Those socialist bastards at Fired Up! Missouri. Categories:…

Missouri is the fifth freest state in the union, study says

Have you been looking for freedom? The latest “Freedom in the 50 States” study from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University shows you where to find it. Missouri ranks as the fifth freest state in the union. The study gauges personal and economic freedoms in order to come up with that conclusion. No word on whether they consulted freedom-looking…

Bonner Springs’ Family Table Restaurant is lovably weird

I think I’ve found one of the best — and cheapest — chicken-fried steak dinners in the metro. But the four-month-old restaurant serving the meal, Family Table at 133 Oak in Bonner Springs, is such an offbeat destination that I worry about its survival. Downtown Bonner Springs doesn’t have the greatest track record for restaurant shelf life: The popular Madame…

Strange fact of the day: Michele Bachmann is KCTV5 meteorologist Gary Amble’s sister

You cannot pick your family members. Who knew that batshit conservative congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann was the sister of KCTV5 meteorologist Gary Amble? I didn’t until reading Star reporter Dave Helling’s story about Bachmann and Amble’s blood ties. “She’s incredibly honest, she’s incredibly smart … personally I think she would (make a good president),” Amble told Helling….

OK Jones reissues up on Bandcamp

Very fine local singer-songwriter Richard Gintowt plays these days with Hidden Pictures. But many of us became fans of Gintowt with his previous band, OK Jones. I think there might be a cracked case of Elephantoms in my car somewhere, but that’s hardly ideal, so it’s nice that Gintowt has decided to post the OK Jones back catalog on Bandcamp….
