KSHB’s Brett Anthony would like to show you a UFO (video)

KSHB Channel 41 meteorologist Brett Anthony pointed out a UFO caught on video during last night’s full moon. Anthony describes the flying object — “looks like a flying car” — in the upper-right corner of the time-lapse video above. He’s not the only local station reporting on UFOs. KCTV5 reported that the number of UFO “sightings nearly tripled last weekend…

Give me a Cheese Frenchee, si vous plaît

Yesterday, I remembered another era in American history when modern technology was going to replace every waiter and waitress in America. This was before computers, so the state-of-the-art technology of the time was a telephone. If I hadn’t spent most of the late 1970s nursing hangovers, I might have remembered that there were other restaurants in that decade that tried…

Hot Lixx Hulahan talks about Thursday night’s U.S. Air Guitar Championship event in Kansas City

Kansas City’s next air-guitar champion will be crowned Thursday night at Crosstown Station. Air Guitar World Champion Hot Lixx Hulahan, KCUR producer Andrea Silenzi and I will make up the three-judge panel deciding KC’s best invisible-guitar player. (The winner goes on to Chicago in July to duel with America’s best air guitarists.) Hot Lixx took time out from sitting around…

ABC’s “Private Practice” to feature a song from local songstress Sara Swenson

ABC’s hit series “Private Practice”, a spinoff of the medical romantic-dramedy “Grey’s Anatomy,” is one of a handful of shows on the air right now that typically features alternative, indie-based soundtracks. So it’s no surprise (though it’s certainly exciting!) that they picked up a track from local songstress Sara Swenson for the series’ season finale, which will air tomorrow night…

The five best beer-sipping patios in Kansas City

It’s Craft Beer Week and it’s 65 degrees. I’m willing to bet that if you don’t drink outside this week, it’s never gonna happen. What might be the finest beer-drinking patio in town hasn’t opened yet, but Paddy O’Quigley’s (in the former Blue Moose Mountain Grill space) at 5317 W. 151st St. in Leawood should be on your agenda this…

Police Chief Jim Corwin retiring in September

Kansas City Police Chief Jim Corwin will retire in September. The Star reported today that Corwin is leaving after 32 years on the force (seven years as chief).  Corwin confirmed it to the daily but didn’t go into detail (he wanted to talk to the force first). So who’s next? Categories: News Tags: Cy Ritter, Darryl Forte, Jim Corwin, Kansas…

Have you ever sent a dish back to the kitchen?

I can still picture the steak that I sent back to the kitchen. It was more cow than steak and seemed to bleat its protest when I approached the peppercorn-encrusted bark with my steak knife. I sent it back, knowing full well that I’d probably get a steak on the charred side of the spectrum. Sending your meal back is…

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback signs bill for stricter abortion clinic regulations

Sam Brownback got a standing ovation during his first State of the State address in January when he called for tighter regulations on abortion clinics. Right-wingers had to be embarrassed that, even with only four abortion doctors working in the state in 2008 (the number comes from before Dr. George Tiller assassination), the Kansas abortion rate was still the 13th highest…

Brian Pennington, handyman accused of slashing woman’s throat, bound over for trial

We still don’t know why handyman Brian Pennington allegedly slit Marti Hill’s throat and left her for dead in her Prairie Village basement. Pennington, 26, was in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing on charges of attempted first-degree murder in the September 8, 2010, attack. Hill’s co-workers called authorities after she didn’t show up at work. Police found Hill in…

Sorry, technology will never replace waiters and waitresses

Count me as one of those people who rolled their eyes at the story that Fat City’s Jonathan Bender reported yesterday about technology — a multifunctional touch-screen device in this case — replacing servers in restaurants. The post struck a chord with several professional servers in town, including waiter/blogger (and soon-to-be book author) David Hayden, who thinks the concept of…
