Literal concert fliers: Who made this awesome poster that’s going viral?

Look closely at this poster. (OK, it’s tiny, but you can find a link after the jump.) It’s going viral on Buzzfeed right now, but that’s not the interesting part. Check out the venue names. Looks like someone is based out of Kansas City, doesn’t it? Who’s the mastermind behind this clever picture that’s going viral? Speak up! Categories: Music

Hannah Schuman, accused of vehicular homicide, has bizarre tramp stamp

I’m not sure what Hannah Marie Schuman’s tramp stamp tells us — if anything — about the vehicular homicide charges filed against her last week. Admittedly, the back tattoo caught my eye while I was looking for the 20-year-old’s mug shot — mostly because the woman sitting on the race car is bent in a way that doesn’t appear humanly…

John McNamara gets 17 years for 131 mph drunk-driving crash

John McNamara was driving his Camaro SS drunk, maxing out at 152 mph on the night of the August 2010 crash that killed Abby Cockrill. Cockrill’s life ended. McNamara’s will merely be put on pause; a judge sentenced the 27-year-old to 17 years in prison (13 years for involuntary manslaughter and four years for assault). “A bright young lady died…

Comments of the Day: Butt Prints in the Sand defenders unite!

This week’s edition of Studies in Crap reviewed Butt Prints in the Sand. Sam Glenn’s ass-filled self-help book is pretty ridiculous, as Crap Archivist Alan Scherstuhl points out. But Glenn isn’t without his defenders. The positivity police have come for Scherstuhl, and we’d like to salute a couple of comments that Scherstuhl holds close to his heart. Categories: News Tags:…

Preacher Marvin Kirkwood is bringing Jesus into nightclubs

On the Body Works Phase II nightclub’s MySpace page, the club assures you that it wants to meet “All the Sexxy people of KC and out of towners who want to party and be entertained in a mature, sexy, classy, fun environment.” That’s a lot of sexiness for one place. Double-X sexiness. So you probably wouldn’t think of it as…

Andrew Connor talks music, life, and the merits of the cover band

It’s a rainy day in Kansas City, and Andrew Connor is at work, sending back defective guitars to vendors for Musician’s Friend. It’s hard to imagine Connor having anything to do with defective gear; the longtime local musician has had his hand in some of the area’s most loved bands over the past decade. Fellow musicians quote him as one…

Wichita kids would rather eat with their own gender, thank you very much

Cooties’ days in Wichita are numbered. Reuters reports that middle schools in the city are converting to lunch periods segregated by sex, and the young’uns love it, as do school administrators who say the arrangement reduces misbehavior and makes students more comfortable. Three middle schools in the Wichita School District now are having boys and girls eat their chicken nuggets…

It’s been a Whopper of a week in Fat City

We barely survived Fat Tuesday this week — well, intern Emily Johnson did with plenty of intense people-watching at Ra Sushi. It all started with posts about all the meat you could possibly eat — Sausagefest, Fazenda Brazilian Grill — and ended up seriously meatless, with a listing of church fish fry dinners. In between, Fat City informed you of…

Kansas City is ‘off the list’ of possible NHL relocation cities

Earlier this week, the hockey writers at the Toronto Globe & Mail discussed the possibility of an NHL franchise relocating to Winnipeg.  Writer Allan Malki offered this revelation about Kansas City’s chances of getting in on some hockey action: As an NHL landing place, Winnipeg comes with questions. Is it big enough? Rich enough? Viable enough with a slightly under-sized…

A Big 12 party at Power & Light

Photo intern Sami Dowd braved fierce team rivalries and drunken sports fans to bring you the highlights of Power & Light’s festivities in honor of the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championship at Sprint Center.

E-tax abolishers lie about city lying about how money is spent

So here’s what we know about the campaign to eliminate the earnings tax in Kansas City, Missouri: It’s dishonest. On Thursday, the e-tax abolishers pretended to catch the city in a lie. Like a detective raising a suspect’s handcuffed wrist in the air, the campaign says the city was recently forced to admit that the entire $200 million collected by…

Does service always matter when you’re picking a restaurant?

The good folks at Gates let you know that they’re willing to help you as soon as you walk in the door. Schlotzsky’s Deli announced earlier this month that the restaurant chain is relaunching its brand with a new look and table service. And now Fazoli’s wants to change customers’ perceptions about the quick-serve Italian restaurant by eliminating plastic bowls…

Charlie Sheen gets an unwanted visit from Kansas City, Kansas, man

In the last two weeks, Charlie Sheen has bent the media universe to his will so thoroughly that his fame now carries weight equal to the sun that he has so easily replaced as center of the universe. He is less a man than a singularity — a point of zero size and infinite density that even now drags us…

Locals InLike hit RecordBar with Parlotones on Sunday night

For a young band — none of InLike’s members have cracked 23 yet — InLike has played some pretty impressive places: the Uptown, the Beaumont Club, and Kansas City’s Warped Tour. (They also opened for Chaka Khan last summer.) Now, the band is setting the stage for the Parlotones’ stop at RecordBar on Sunday night, in advance of InLike’s album…

Ryan Maybee digs into the Rieger Hotel’s fascinating history

This week’s Cafe review in The Pitch gives a little history of the 96-year-old hotel building that now houses the new Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange. But the restaurant’s co-owner, Ryan Maybee, is becoming something of an expert on the history of both the Rieger family that built the property and their various business interests. And it’s a fascinating story….

R.I.P., Jimmy Bond of Beatles tribute band Liverpool

Jimmy Bond, one of the founding members of the local Beatles tribute band Liverpool, died yesterday at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. Prior to his retirement from music performance in 2006, Jimmy spent 16 years performing as “Paul” in Liverpool, and as drummer, bassist, rhythm guitarist and frontman with party band Plain Jane dating back to 1971….
