Woolly Woolly

Throughout the year, the American Royal offers plenty of opportunities for city slickers to brush up on the scent of horse apples and see what a steak looks like when it’s still part of a living, breathing animal. Occasionally, the livestock on display at the Cowtown event complex is a bit more exotic. This weekend, for example, the Midwest Alpaca…

Get in the Pit

One of the remaining independently owned bookstores in Kansas City is also one of the few places in town to hear — or deliver — live poetry. The 13-year-old Prospero’s Books (1800 West 39th Street), owned by published writers Will Leatham and Tom Wayne, puts on a salon-style open-mic night called Prospero’s Pit the fourth Sunday of every month. Tonight’s…

Nerdvana

Winning warlock Charlie Sheen is the subject of Bluewater Productions’ latest line of graphic novels, Infamous. Marc Shapiro’s comic-book biography of the self-destructive goddess collector is still in production but promises to chronicle Sheen’s every bad habit. Unfortunately, the actor won’t be making an appearance at this weekend’s Planet Comicon, at the Overland Park International Trade Center (6800 West 115th…

Simian Liberation Army

Post-apocalyptic convict James Cole (Bruce Willis) wishes he had it as easy as Marty McFly. When Marty travels back in time, only the futures of Doc Brown and Marty’s family are at stake. Cole, on the other hand, surfs the space-time continuum to prevent a weaponized virus from wiping out 5 billion people, and he doesn’t always hit his target…

Serious Black

Among the premier satirists of our time, Jon Stewart is the sincere one, Stephen Colbert is the smartass, and Bill Maher is the provocateur. But in terms of sheer sputtering incredulity and apoplectic rage, no one speaks for the American Everyman quite like Lewis Black. The man is a bubbling cauldron of barely contained righteous fury, ready to scald every…

Thick Shakes

Experts disagree about the magnitude of the comedian known as Earthquake, but his stand-up is at least 7.3-ish. He shakes the Kansas City Improv (7260 Northwest 87th Street) for a five-show engagement starting tonight. The former owner of the Stone Mountain Comedy Club in Atlanta, Nathaniel Stroman is a bold, brash and loud proponent of the “it’s funny because it’s…

No Way to Treat a Lady

Based on the best selling novel by William Goldman (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and adapted as a movie of the same name, this uproarious, sexy musical gives new meaning to the phrase “knock ’em dead.” A serial killer is on the prowl, and Detective Morris Brummell is on the case. As Long As You Don’t Try to Date One

Contradicting the outcome in the Flight of the Conchords’ song “The Humans Are Dead,” a display at the Dean’s Gallery at UMKC’s Miller Nichols Library (800 East 51st Street, second floor) shows that humans and robots can get along famously. Robots in the Social Landscape, an art installation by Margaret Brommelsiek, was partly inspired by the library’s book robot, which…

Harry Truman’s 12-Inchers

If it’s too loud, you’re too old. The name of a new exhibit at the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site (223 North Main, Independence, 816-254-9929) expresses that same sentiment, if a little more nicely. It’s Not Noise. It Is Music features more than 250 albums that belonged to the Truman family. Find out what constituted rebel music to the…

Eat and Roll

With casual-dining restaurants offering fast-food prices, it’s becoming easier to avoid drive-throughs at lunchtime. Instead of heading for the nearest T.G.I. Friday’s, consider Frito pie or chicken fingers … at a bowling alley. Every Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mission Bowl (5399 Martway in Mission, 913-432-7000) serves up its Lunch ‘N Bowl Special — for $10,…

Chad Ochocinco Sporting Kansas City tryout day one (video)

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco had his first day of a four-day tryout with Sporting Kansas City. Frankly, it was a light day for the six-time Pro Bowler. While the majority of the club toiled on one end of the field at the team’s Swope Park practice facility, Ochocinco did rudimentary footwork, passing and shooting drills one-on-one with an…

Arnoldo Bazan pleaded guilty to poisoning salsa at Mi Ranchito

Arnoldo Bazan wanted revenge on the owner of Mi Ranchito. So he and his girlfriend, Yini De La Torre, poisoned the Lenexa Mexican restaurant’s salsa and served it to customers. Bazan, 31, pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiracy to tamper with a consumer product. He admitted that he was angry that he’d lost his job at the restaurant, and he believed…
