Abe Vigoda and Wild Nothing bring trendy tunes to the Jackpot tonight

Wild Nothing exists in the netherworld among pulsating dance pop, melodic British dark wave and shimmering shoegaze. Even leader Jack Tatum’s sad tenor recalls such British romantics as the Smiths, Love and Rockets, and the Cure. The band peels back the songs’ recorded layers with attack and energy in a live setting, transforming into a true-and-tried rock act. Categories: Music…

Kansas City is hosting a Camp Zoe benefit show

The Uptown’s website says that the Schwag — you know, the Grateful Dead tribute band that Schwagstock is named after — is stopping in Kansas City on March 4. Apparently, the show is a benefit for Camp Zoe, the former site of Schwagstock that was raided and seized by the DEA last year. Categories: Music Tags: camp zoe, DEA, schwagstock

Cafe Up Close: Hickok’s Bar & Grill

Charles Ferruzza wonders whether the month-old Hickok’s in the River Market is in the right space at the right time. Only time will tell — but until then, we have great pictures of the restaurant and its menu, taken by Pitch photographer Matthew Taylor.

Ray LaMontagne is coming to Starlight this summer

The sultry-voiced folkster will hit up Starlight with Secret Sisters and Brandi Carlile on June 15. The show is sponsored by 90.9 the Bridge, which makes sense: Though Ray LaMontagne is rooted firmly in the adult-alternative genre, his easy, loping Americana is difficult to hate. (Bonus points: He and his band, the Pariah Dogs, also recently won a Grammy for…

Red-light cameras’ future in Missouri dims

Big Brother is pulling out of Jefferson County. Or, depending on your opinion of red-light cameras, Jefferson County just became a lot more dangerous. That’s because American Traffic Solutions, the Arizona-based company that runs the cameras in Jefferson County and other Missouri communities, is pulling out of the suburban St. Louis county. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that ATS grew…

Harley-Davidson has reached an initial collective-bargaining agreement with its unions at the motorcycle maker’s Kansas City plant, according to the Kansas City Business Journal. We don’t know what this agreement entails exactly, but details should become public after the unions meet with their members today and vote on the deal on Monday.  Categories: News Tags: Harley-Davidson

Fake Freedom Inc. ballot circulating 3rd District polls?

Think anyone would be fooled into thinking that any old sample ballot was the official ballot made by the historic, black political club Freedom Inc.? A “fake” Freedom ballot was reportedly circulating around several East Side polling places, including the Boys & Girls Club on 43rd, and another at Eighth and Cleveland. The fake says “FREEDOM” in a circle of…

Everett Teaford’s truck stolen while at Royals spring training

If you happen to be down in Surprise, Arizona, and see a 2004 Ford F-250 diesel truck with Georgia plates, you might want to give the cops a call. The pickup of Royals rookie pitcher Everett Teaford was stolen Sunday night while he was out to dinner with his teammates. “I get done eating, and here I am looking around…

Gary Lezak tells snow-weary viewers that climate change is real

NBC Action News action weatherman Gary Lezak took a stand against ignorance on Monday’s 10 p.m. broadcast. Residents have shoveled a lot of snow over the course of the last two winters. But contrary to what Sean Hannity and idiotic editorial cartoonists believe, the flakes do not mean that global warming has stopped. Lezak told viewers that the Earth is…

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s union-busting moves smell kinda Koch-y

Well, whadya know. Lots of sources are reporting that Wichita’s billionaire bros for all things conservative, Charles and David Koch, are partly behind Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s current move to strip collective-bargaining rights from government workers. Not directly, mind you. Koch Industries’ involvement  is shielded under the company’s political umbrella, Americans for Prosperity. Categories: News, Politics Tags: Americans For Prosperity,…

Phill Kline doesn’t have a problem with lying to get what he wants

%{}% Former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline is totally cool with lying to state agencies to get what he wants. Kline’s vendetta against two clinics is on trial in a state ethics hearing that could lead to the Sunflower State’s former top cop being stripped of his law license, which is already suspended because Kline didn’t pay a $50 renewal…

Dashboard Confessional guitarist John Lefler rocks Czar Bar

On tour in support of his solo album, Better by Design, John Lefler (guitarist and keyboardist for emo mainstay Dashboard Confessional) will roll through Kansas City early next month. Though, to be honest, I’m not sure how “supportive” a tour is that’s for an album released in 2009. Lefler has said of his album: “People have referred to it as…
