Rush Limbaugh’s grandma’s ghastly Jell-O salad and 9 other Studies in Crap finds to be thankful for

Each Thursday your Crap Archivist has brought you the finest in forgotten and bewildering crap discovered in the thrift stores, estate sales, and antique malls of America. Today, as we reflect on this nation and its great bounty, let’s tip our gravy boats to the one industry that can never be outsourced: our tireless production of the useless, the senseless,…

Ryan M. McNames, stiffed by prostitutes, learns hard lesson

Ryan M. McNames probably used his one phone call to dial up the Better Business Bureau and complain about the blow job a prostitute stiffed him on — in more ways than one. McNames, apparently not very bright at 19, called the Columbia police after a prostitute reneged on a deal to give him a BJ. Here’s how the Columbia…

Paul Robinson dies — legendary restaurateur created Gilbert/Robinson empire

The Houlihan’s restaurant chain is such a familiar part of Kansas City’s restaurant community, it’s hard to imagine that when restaurateurs Joe Gilbert and Paul Robinson launched the chain, in 1972, it was considered one of the most innovative, trend-setting dining concepts of its era. Robinson, who co-founded the Gilbert/Robinson restaurant empire with Joe Gilbert in 1961, died at his…

The issues we’d like to see addressed at a Slurpee Summit

Whether or not a Slurpee Summit happens in Washington, D.C., there are a number of issues that need to be addressed in relation to the signature 7-Eleven drink. There are questions about flavors and what happens when you drink a Slurpee too fast. America demands answers, 7-Eleven. And by America, we mean one cubicle at 1701 Main. Categories: Dining, Food…

Life’s a Cabaret at Flo’s

Well, a neighborhood church doesn’t care for it, but we loved the characters at Flo’s Cabaret. Here’s hoping they can keep the party going later. All photos were taken by Cameron Gee.

The new Lazy 7″ EP is out now, sort of

Lazy is one of the hotter local acts knocking around town right now. I’m borderline afraid of how cool they look and how cool their sound is.  It’s little surprise, then, that Record Machine honcho Nathan Reusch promptly scooped them up and folded them into his Kansas City music empire this past summer. They’ve been busy readying a 7″ EP, and it’s…

Three Prairie Village schools locked down as police search for burglary suspects

Doesn’t sound like there’s much to be alarmed about here, but KMBC Channel 9 is reporting that three Prairie Village schools are on lockdown as police search the area for suspects in a burglary. The three schools are Highlands Elementary, Prairie Elementary and Indian Hills Middle School.  The burglary reportedly took place near 63rd and State Line. Again, probably nothing…

Pretty Polly will be avenged at 2010’s Murder Ballad Ball

Gunslingers, thieves and lovers. This year’s Murder Ballad Ball — which is the event’s second incarnation; check out a review and a slideshow of last year’s here — is bound to boast all three, plus a hearty helping of the dish best served cold: revenge. Dutch Humphrey, who’s a member of Atlantic Fadeout and Cadillac Flambe, and Kris Bruders, Humphrey’s…

The five unforgivable food mistakes

If you eat out often enough, eventually you’re going to get a dish that is simply off for some reason. Restaurants make mistakes, although not as often as many diners might suggest, because at the end of the day there are still people (thankfully) involved with making a majority of your food. And while the extra shot of syrup that…

Wilco and Intelligensia look to make a sweet cup of java

The best part of waking up? Why, it’s Jeff Tweedy in your cup. Wilco is launching its own coffee line. Jonathan Bender over at The Pitch’s food blog, Fat City, has the deets. You can have it “Either Way.” Wilco is getting set to launch Wilco Selections — a line of regular and decaffeinated coffee beans through a partnership with…

Wilco and Intelligentsia look to make a sweet cup of java

You can have it “Either Way.” Wilco is getting set to launch Wilco Selections — a line of regular and decaffeinated coffee beans through a partnership with Chicago-based Intelligentsia. And as The Onion’s A/V Club notes, this isn’t the first foray into food for Wilco. The indie band has branded beer and a sandwich shop in Toronto. They’re like the…
