Royals get a drubbing from Twins in 19-1 rout

Well, that was ugly. The Royals absolutely got their asses handed to them last night in 19-1 blowout loss to the Minnesota Twins. Hang L No. 10 of the season on Zack Greinke, who gifted Twins rookie Danny Valencia his first major league home run — a grand slam. Meanwhile, Joe Mauer went five for five with a home run…

Cheeseburger smoothie is liquid gold for Jamba Juice

McDonald’s clearly got the attention of Jamba Juice with its new line of smoothies. And boy, am I glad. Jamba Juice launched a parody marketing campaign for Cheeseburger Chill Smoothies — a blended-up burger with a ketchup-and-mustard swirl. Wondering if a burger will blend? Yes, it will….meat chunk by meat chunk.  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink Tags: Jamba Juice, mcdonalds

The New Pornographers: pornin’ it up…together

The New Pornographers construct set lists that serve as a perfect primer to those unfamiliar with the Vancouver pseudo-super group and an incredibly well-rounded collection of deep cuts and favorites for diehard fans. Last night’s show at Liberty Hall was no exception. It was a remarkably solid set from one of the best working pop bands today with the lineup…

The New Pornographers at Liberty Hall

The New Pornographer’s show at Liberty Hall last night was a remarkably solid set from one of the best working pop bands today with the lineup they’re meant to have — including Neko Case, A.C. Newman, and Dan Bejar — despite every member’s prior engagements with flourishing solo careers. Read Ian Hrabe’s review of the night and check out pics…

He tells us Westport was packed with police cars after the shooting. The police report says officers patrolling clearing out the streets just before 3 a.m. heard gunshots and traced it back…

Kauffman, Arrowhead vendors flagged for violations

It’s not just the performance on the field for local sports teams that is hard to swallow. While the good news is that Arrowhead Stadium has less critical violations for vendors than Kauffman Stadium. The bad news is that it was 56 percent of vendors with critical violations as compared to 62 percent. So, listen up Blanc, we’re looking to…

James Otto, OP insurance man, accused of mishandling seniors’ savings

The Missouri secretary of state’s office says an Overland Park man made “unsuitable annuity sales,” which translates into English as “ripping off old people.” A cease-and-desist order accuses James Otto, a former Bankers Life and Casualty Co. insurance agent, of steering investors into products that were better for him than his clients. Though not licensed to sell securities or give…

Todd Tiahrt to win Senate race with love of racist vigilante

The fight between Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran for Sam Brownback’s soon-to-be-vacant U.S. Senate seat has been plenty ugly in recent weeks. The two Republicans are trying to out-conservative the other. But only one man is conservative enough to win the heart of the most important vigilante leader and Nazi sympathizer of the last decade. Toro Y Moi, Alejandro Escovedo, Electric Six all playing here soon

Hammy, overblown rock act Electric Six will bring its traveling party to the Riot Room on Saturday, October 30.  Chaz Bundick, better known as Toro Y Moi, is at the Czar Bar on Saturday, August 14, playing a set of what people have unfortunately taken to calling “chillwave.”  Alejandro Escovedo, formerly of Rank and File and currently of being a singer-songwriter that more famous…

DEVO spazzes out at the third Buzz Under the Stars

Thanks to construction on I-70 from Lawrence, I arrived just in time to miss openers Crash Kings, which gave enough time to wander the perimeter of 96.5 the Buzz’s third installment of its summer concert series, Buzz Under the Stars. In a rare show of inspiration, 96.5 the Buzz acquired weirdo-rock legends DEVO — and then relegated them to a fifty minute set…

Kansas prosecutor disbarred for taking bribes from strip club

Michael Goodrich probably saw this coming. The 47-year-old former Cherokee County Attorney had already been sentenced to spend a year and a day in federal prison. Now, the Kansas Supreme Court has disbarred Goodrich for the same crime: taking money and favors from the owner, manager and employees of Sensations Gentleman’s Club in Galena, Kansas. Kansas City should embrace frozen yogurt

Forget the aspartame tang of frozen yogurt still familiar from its ’80s dieting fad. You could believe that was not yogurt. Instead, swap out the sweet fro-yo for the Korean-style tart stuff — the dessert equivalent of Greek yogurt. Five years after Pinkberry opened its first shop in Southern California, the tart-yogurt wars have come to Kansas City. In the…

Pearl Thuston Brown turns 83 at GiGi’s Jazz Inn

“I haven’t done this one for years, so hang on with me,” commented Pearl Thuston Brown as she began her version of “My Romance.” Her raspy alto rolled gently alongside her piano. “I used to sing that song with the Lionel Hampton’s band at the Savoy Ballroom in New York City,” she said. Portia’s Cafe turns 30

Portia serves a big ol’ burger A tip o’ the coffee mug to my friend Mike Bushnell, publisher of the Northeast News, for alerting me that one of my favorite diners in the historic Northeast was celebrating its 30-year anniversary. We’ve written about Portia’s Cafe before in Fat City, noting that the exterior of the restaurant looks like a small-town jail…

Samuel Logan, partner at Overland Park law firm, accused of trying to sex an undercover cop posing as a 14-year-old girl

By now, you’d think that pervy dudes would realize that the 14-year-old girls that they’re trying to sex on the Internet are really handlebar mustachioed cops (or something like that). Have we learned nothing from Chris Hansen and To Catch a Predator? Guess not. The feds nailed Samuel P. Logan, 45, a partner at big-ass Overland Park law firm Foulston…
