Kris Kobach, Sheriff Joe join forces tonight for double-barreled attack on immigrants

Further cementing his place on the fringe of area politics, Kansas Secretary of State candidate Kris Kobach will team up tonight with Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio — the inmate-killing, immigrant-harassing, power-abusing sheriff of Phoenix’s Maricopa County, who is under investigation by a federal grand jury — for a rally in Overland Park entitled “Illegal Means Illegal.” I guess they’ll be…

Escaping the hordes at the grocery store

%{}% Harrowing tales of near collisions from the aisles of the grocery store leave one couple looking for which day of the week is the safest to go shopping. Summer treats from around the city and a recommendation on a scoop shop serving vegetarian chili dogs. Animals are not often like they’re portrayed in the cartoons. And then you see…

The mastermind behind Junction City’s Obama-hatin’ billboard speaks!

Someone isn’t a fan of the president in J.C. Last week I wrote about a billboard facing I-70 out in Junction City, Kansas, that calls the president of the United States a “fraud,” suggests you demand his resignation, and just happens to overlook the motel Timothy McVeigh slept in right before hitting the road for Oklahoma City. I also pointed…

Eating light: Orange and fennel salad

Orange and fennel salad When the weather’s hot and sultry, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a cool, summery dish that’s loaded with flavor and soothingly light. McCormick & Schmick’s on the Country Club Plaza is offering a tasty small salad created with fresh orange wedges (the salad could actually use more of them); ribbons of fresh fennel (the sweet,…

Burlesque returns to Folly Theater (slideshow)

Kansas City’s burlesque scene returned to its roots on Saturday evening with a performance full of pasties, fishnets and chutzpah at the Folly Theater. This was the first time since the Folly Theater closed its doors in the 1970s that burlesque found a home on its stage. The evening didn’t disappoint either with performances from jazz singer Emily Frost, burlesque…

Saturday’s Toyota Farm to Table Tour

Webster House chef Charles d’Ablaing Twelve local chefs served up samplings of everything from soup to steak last Saturday at the City Market during an unusual promotion by Toyota that “showcased the thriving Kansas City culinary scene and celebrated the connection between farmers markets and the communities they serve.” And yes, cars were part of the deal, too.   Categories:…

A city that doesn’t work — flooding edition (videos)

Better keep your waders in your car. You never know when a 10-minute burst of rain will flood Kansas City’s streets. Westport flooded again, no surprise there. Actually, none of the flooding was a surprise to anyone who lives here and realizes that the city’s infrastructure is crap. But yesterday was another chance for local weather watchers to bust out…
