Perhaps the greatest food discovery since nacho cheese

Until now there’s been no way to avoid volcano mouth, wherein the molten-hot center of whatever frozen pocket-burrito-egg-roll eviscerates your tongue and the roof of your mouth upon the first bite. Hot Pockets are the modern Sword of Damocles. The gushy interior has a half-life that demands it be eaten before it cools. But the window for avoiding the searing…

A real-world XXL … or a NASCAR medium?

Yes, there’s an adult behind this T-shirt. Behold the magnificence of this dress-length T-shirt spotted at Vanity Fair, the Lee and Wrangler Jeans store out at the Legends Shopping Center. The shirt promotes Lowe’s, a chain of hardware stores you can see from space, and Jimmie Johnson, which I believe is a brand of sausages. The shirt is sized “Medium.” That’s a full-sized…

More Big Star sadness: R.I.P Andy Hummel

Big Star fans have already had a rough 2010: the band’s lead singer and songwriter, Alex Chilton, passed away in March, several days before his scheduled appearance at SXSW. Andy Hummel, the band’s original bassist, performed at the subsequent tribute. Sadly, Hummel passed away at age 59 after a two year battle with cancer, according to Ken Stringfellow’s Twitter. (Stringfellow…

Hey, Mark Lowrey: Where does your money come from?

What You Do For Money Honey takes us beyond the music and into the cubicles, restaurants and storefronts that allow local musicians to pay the bills. Local pianist Mark Lowrey is a productive dude. He’s gigging somewhere around town nearly every night of the week, either solo, or with Trio ALL, or with one of a seemingly endless number of…

Rafael Armstrong accused of killing Stephon Robinson in gun battle

Spent shell casings were everywhere after a gun fight at 5818 Michigan last Thursday afternoon. They weren’t the only bits of evidence of a gun fight in the area. Police found handguns (one with a spent shell in the barrel) and extended clip with seven live rounds. The body of 21-year-old Stephon J. Robinson was found on a sidewalk, covering…

Beach Fossils, Lamb of God: Monday’s Best Bets

Did you think Best Bets would phone it in today, just because of how insanely tired it is? That is ridiculous — how could you ever think something like that? Best Bets never takes a day off! Look, see: Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils is at the Replay. The band plays lazy, jangly, chill-out jams with a post-punk edge, like the Cure…

Watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives at Swagger tonight

Phelps vs. Gaga: the showdown continues

Lady Gaga is notorious for tweeting funny, witty, and insightful things on the fly about her fans. (Click here for a top ten list from the music blog of our sister paper, the Riverfront Times, for more of ’em.) At Lady Gaga’s show in St. Louis on Saturday night, Phelps and his crew of Westboro Baptist Church protesters showed up…

It’s not what happens on the field, it’s what you eat in the stands that matters

The lobstah roll at Fenway Park can suck it. And the Texas-Style Pulled Pork BBQ Nacho from Minute Maid Park can eat it. Because the Kansas City Ribeye Stack from Kauffman Stadium beat out a dozen offerings in the barbecue competition from Aramark concession stands at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game held last week in Anaheim, California.  But really, was…

Desperately seeking Big Boi at the Jones

Listening to rumors is never a good idea. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This little bit of life advice is especially true when it comes to celebrity appearances. Upon word that OutKast’s Big Boi — the less sartorially experimental but equally talented yin to André 3000’s yang — would be performing at the Jones…

John Cena meets Make-a-Wish kids and WWE Money in the Bank (slideshow)

Wrestling star John Cena spent Sunday morning inside a Kansas City 7-Eleven on a shopping spree with a couple of Make-a-Wish kids. The muscle-bound grappler granted wishes for Omari Stennett , whose family flew in from New York, and Caleb Comenares, who lives in Grain Valley, as he closes in on his 200th wish granted. “The kids who ask for…

I’ll take the falafel plate

Fold it in a wedge of pita and you’ve got a hot sandwich You can also call these fried chickpea patties — according to the most recent updated version of The Food Lover’s Companion — “croquettes,” unless, of course, they’re ball-shaped. The falafel at the restaurant serving this dish are very green, thanks to the fresh cilantro in the batter. They…

Unclaimed vehicles auction offers wrecks and nice rides

Kansas City’s Tow Services Division has its monthly unclaimed vehicle auction on Tuesday. While most cars are in rough shape (their owners, after all, never bothered to retrieve them), there are a few gems in the lot. Auction manager Steve Dawson showed me some of the more notable vehicles.  Categories: News Tags: auction, cars, Tow Services Division

Celebrating Our Thirtieth at the Jones

While some dread turning the big 3-0, we here at The Pitch revel in it. Several of our closest friends joined us at the Jones Pool for a celebratory sun and swim. Pitch photographer Crissy Dastrup caught it all.

KC restaurants once like Disneyland

It might have been the beets… Fat City reader Holly read our post about Kansas City’s first Viennese restaurant — many decades before Grunauer opened in the Crossroads — and recalls eating at the “theme” restaurants at the top of the Commerce Tower in the 1960s, including a salad at the Salzberg Haus that nearly made her throw up. Iced coffee doesn’t mean sweet coffee

It’s great that iced coffee is now widely available. I’m glad to see that restaurants and fast-food chains have discovered that a cup filled with ice and a little bit of coffee can be a tremendous profit generator. But iced coffee is now the biggest tease since watching Sonic commercials from my apartment in Brooklyn. This…delicious…limeade…is only 300 miles away!…

Rightbloggers go Alex Jones, denounce bipartisan ‘ruling class,’ propose groovy revolution — to elect Republicans

%{}% Recently the top Google Trend item — with “volcanic” traffic — was “Obama Deception Censored.” The phrase relates to filmmaker and Infowars proprietor Alex Jones’ claim that his movie Obama Deception had been “erased, obliterated, censored” from YouTube via a hacked password. (He doesn’t explain why he didn’t just make a new account and re-post his film, but you…
