Chop talk: five suggested new slogans for pork

The National Pork Board is apparently retiring the slogan “The Other White Meat” after 23 years. We’ll give you a moment to digest the disappearance of the vaguely suggestive, slightly incomprehensible message. Second maybe only to “Beef, It’s What’s For Dinner” in the prominent meat slogan category, this campaign leaves us with a legacy of pork commercials that were meant…

Why we have fat children

Baby wants a bottle…of chocolate! A friend of mine has two children who never saw a vegetable for most of their childhood. I mean, yes, the kids saw vegetables at the supermarket, but their mother never bought any of them. Her idea of “fresh vegetables” was french fries. A typical dinner for this family was fried chicken nuggets. Mom says…

June is National Iced Tea Month

I would say that all of the summer months are perfect for iced tea, but since the temperature really start heating up in June, it makes sense that this is “ice tea month.” Yesterday, as it turns out, was National Iced Tea Day. Without knowing that, I sipped a very nice glass of iced tea on the patio at the new…

Kris Cheatum, local peace activist, dead at 73

Longtime peace activist Kris Cheatum died on June 6. Back in 2006, I wrote about Cheatum and her husband, Lynn, (“Granny the Terrorist”). They believed the government was spying on them. And in 2003, ex-Pitch writer Allie Johnson wrote about the Cheatums (“Young Blood”). Cheatum’s obituary is a better tribute than I could give. Categories: News Tags: Kris Cheatum, Lynn…
