Be a dot in a Michael Jackson tribute portrait

Jacko fans across the world are submitting their pictures to be a part of a pointillism portrait of the late pop star, celebrating the one-year anniversary of the singer’s death. (Pointillism is an aggregation of tiny dots of color and shade which form a larger image.) It’s a project by David Ilan, and apparently about 25,000 fans from 180 countries…

Kansas City chefs are opening up their kitchens for Bonnie Rabicoff. The former KCPT executive has a new gig hosting a weekly foodie show that airs on KXTR and KMBC. The first episode of In The Kitchen With Bonnie debuted earlier this month. “The restaurants are all locally owned and chef driven. And those chefs have a commitment to working…

Vuvuzelas impossible to find in Kansas City

By now, anybody paying even the slightest attention to the World Cup knows the word vuvuzela. The ubiquitous long plastic horns, which produce a nausea-inducing buzzing sound and have long been a staple of South African soccer matches, have been the nonstop soundtrack to this year’s tournament. Packs of fans from competing nations have adopted the noisemakers as the best…

The Backstreet Boys at the Midland

Backstreet’s back. They said it first. And then, the Backstreet Boys said it over and over through the whole debacle last night at the Midland. A few minutes before the Backstreet Boys — henceforth referred to as BSB — graced Kansas City with their presence, the crowd of young girls and their moms (along with a few gay boys) chanted,…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, June 22

%{}% Love and four-tops are battlefields. Managers are compared to their army analogs based on their approach to working with servers. The ham on bun from Gates might be a meatier chicken soup when it comes to curing what ails you. Ralcorp Holdings Inc. is purchasing Kansas City-based American Italian Pasta Co. for approximately $1.2 billion. There are plenty of…

Kevin Yoder sure does have cute kids. What? Those aren’t his kids? Not again!

%{}% What a good-looking family. In his new campaign video for Congress, Kevin Yoder appears to have a photogenic, all-American brood: three adorable girls and a boy, who seem to embody the heartland values Yoder espouses in his new campaign video.%{}% Except those aren’t Yoder’s children. If you just watched the video and didn’t know any better, you’d think these were…

Lilith Local Talent Search Winner: Sara Swenson

Remember the gigantic chick-rock festival that’s going to take over Sandstone on July 15? Well, the results of Lilith Fair’s local talent search — which gives one lucky act an opening slot at the festival — are in.  Kansas City’s own singer-songwriter (and 2009 PMA winner) Sara Swenson will be opening for the likes of Sarah McLaughlin, Kelly Clarkson, Metric…

Best Bets, Monday: Prids, Soft Tags, Thee Water Moccasins

RecordBar’s got a good night planned for everyone. Sonic Spectrum music trivia at 7 p.m., then a couple of Portland imports. The Soft Tags list R.E.M. and the Velvet Underground as influences on their Myspace page, and, yep, I definitely hear both of those in there. The Prids’ post-punk should jibe nicely with local openers Thee Water Moccasins, which features dudes…

James Christos, Enigmatic Tour Diary: Entry #1

Kansas City’s own scrappy underground rapper James Christos is embarking on a big-ass tour that kicked off last night at RecordBar. He’s going to be checking in periodically with us here at Wayward to fill us in on his exploits, and we are not going to edit a single word of what he says. Bring on the internet acronyms, Christos!…

Born Ruffians at the Riot Room

Herky-jerky Canadian band Born Ruffians will be at the Riot Room on October 16 in support of its new album, Say It. The album came out on June 1, and it’s hailed as the band’s more “mature” stab at their exuberant, sunny rock sound. (Okay, so Pitchfork rated it a bruising 3.8…which the band’s website calls a “3.8 out of…

North America’s number-one indie-rock supergroup the New Pornographers will stop by Liberty Hall in Lawrence on July 27. Tickets are on sale now. They’re joined by Imaad Wasif and San Francisco’s Dodos, who offer pleasant, Shins-y folk-rock tunes. Your guide to Missouri’s latest poop spills

The poop keeps coming. The Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources reported a pair of wastewater releases in Kansas City that warranted investigations on Thursday and Friday. The first was at 11700 Cleveland Avenue, where a sewer line broke and spilled an estimated 95,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into Kernoodle Lake. (Kernoodle? Seriously?) Remembering Putsch’s 210

Putsch’s 210 in its heyday Not quite a month ago, we found a historical document for the Fat City archives: a full-color postcard of the long-forgotten Salzberg Haus from the 1970s, proving that Kansas City did have a Viennese restaurant long before the Grunauer family opened its namesake restaurant in the Freighthouse District. In that same Fat City post, another…

Bob Dylan to play Starlight in August

Hide the children! Still got it.  Jk, jk. But Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the man is grizzled, no? His face finally looks the way his voice sounds. Although his voice has also become croakier as the years have passed. Minor details. Dylan is aging gracefully when it comes down to it, unlike certain other heroes of mine, and the jumpin’ bluesman/insane…
