In December, Fat City had a chance to talk…

Rockfest aftermath: Penn Valley Park is a muddy wasteland (updated)

Original story (10:55 a.m. May 18): Parks Board Commissioner Aggie Stackhaus is weeping like Iron Eyes Cody after Rockfest destroyed 14 acres of Penn Valley Park. AEG is paying for the repairs, but Stackhaus doesn’t want the annual rock festival to return to the park (The Pitch’s Berry Anderson filed a dispatch from the scene). I stopped out this morning…

The F-Holes get country drunk

Empty Glass is a weekly post devoted to furthering the alcoholic rock star image and mythos. That’s right, kids — drinking has no negative side effects and makes you look cool, to boot. While out wandering on Sunday evening after a graduation party in Lawrence’s student ghetto, I popped into the Replay Lounge just in time to catch the F-Holes…

Flushing a toilet is about to get really expensive. Finalizing an agreement with the Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, has agreed to spend $2.5 billion upgrading its sewer system. The work will begin in 2014.Karl Brooks, the regional administrator of the EPA, announced the consent decree on Tuesday at the Anita B….

The lingering aroma of sauerbraten and scandal

The old Bear needs a new tenant For decades, this unassuming storefront at 7815 Wornall Road was the home of the Berliner Bear, a popular German restaurant owned and operated by Joel and Nettie Womack — and, years later, by their son Bill. They served very good sausages, potato salad and apple strudel. The popularity of German food has always waxed…

Controversial animal rights activist Jason Miller’s crusade last year to save the deer in Shawnee Mission Park has landed him on probation for a year. Miller pleaded guilty Monday to violating a protection from-stalking order — taken out by Johnson County Parks and Rec director Michael Meadors after Miller delivered a protest letter against the deer harvest by Meadors’ home…

Remembering the inventor of the Chipwich

Richard LaMotta, the inventor of the Chipwich, died at his home in Chappaqua, New York, last Tuesday. He was 67. The Chipwich — vanilla ice cream ringed with chocolate chips between two chocolate chip cookies — was said to have been born from LaMotta’s love of dunking cookies in milk. In 1981, LaMotta employed street cart vendors in pith helmets…

Bobbie Jo Geveshausen videotapes sexual abuse of her 16-year-old daughter, gets 58 years in prison

Bobbie Jo Geveshausen liked to videotape her boyfriend, Edward D. Shockey, sexually abusing her 16-year-old daughter. And sometimes, the 43-year-old woman liked to join in. For that, she’ll be serving 58 years in prison — a sentence that ignores the Missouri Sentencing Advisory Commission’s recommendation of probation. “It is difficult to imagine the depravity of a mother who would willingly…

One More Cup’s answer to a rainy day

With a weekend of rain behind us and more rain slated for mid-week, I stopped into One More Cup (7408 Wornall Road) hoping to find an antidote. Manager George Magers was only too happy to oblige when I asked him for what he’d recommend to brighten my spirits. “Most folks will order something hot, but our diehard ice drinkers, they’ll…

Rockfest 2010 at Liberty Memorial

Rockfest has come and gone, but we have pictures capturing the crowds and weather conditions that destroyed 14 acres of Penn Valley Park.

Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s sparsely attended carnival/town hall meeting at Sprint Center (slideshow)

Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s town hall meeting at the Sprint Center last night was bizarre, sad and sparsely attended. The 18,000 seat arena looked cavernous with maybe 300 people attending (and that might be generous). Many of the attendees were students and school officials there to collect awards. Take a look at the town hall, which on the outside looked more…

Sunday morning Eggs Benedict (Update)

Update (9:54, 5/18): Here’s the answer to this week’s Where Am I Eating? quiz. Here were the clues: The restaurant that serves the featured plate of Eggs Benedict does a very nice Sunday brunch and, even better, has some of the most attractive servers in Kansas City bringing out the plates. That includes former local stage actress Kirsten Carver (does…

Mysterious spider-covered truck roams Kansas City

Last week, I couldn’t help but notice the giant spider emblazoned on the side of this truck driving along Main Street into the Crossroads. The truck’s windows were tinted, so I never got a look at the driver, who flipped a U-turn on Main and parked in front of Tootsies. I tried to double back fast, but by the time…

As an added bonus, the show at Worth Harley-Davidson on Saturday, June 5, is free! You’ll also get the Federation of Horsepower and the Nigel Dupree Band for a…
