Mean Melin meets fan for life Nordic Thunder in the Comment of the Week

After Justin Kendall pointed out this week that the air-guitar hero’s journey is never an easy one, supportive comments rolled in for deposed supershredder Eric “Mean” Melin. Our favorite comment on that thread — or pretty much anywhere this week — comes from Melin’s broth-AIR Nordic Thunder, the air-guitar champion of Chicago. The whole note is as rousing as Henry…

Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved. With great drinking opportunities come great responsibility and this weekend there’s a two-fer in the Northland. Parkville hosts its seventh annual Microbrewfest on Saturday from 1 to 5 in  English Landing Park. More than 30 breweries and brewpubs are attending,…

Bands added to tonight’s Flaming Lips show

In addition to the previously announced openers for tonight’s Flaming Lips show at Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone, there are two additions. If you show up early (and we mean early: doors are at 4:00 p.m., and the show starts at 5:00 p.m.), you’ll be able to see the Ettes and Stardeath and White Dwarfs. Showing up early is recommended…

Christopher J. Harris, KCMO homicide 32: Man fatally shot Thursday

Kansas City police identified 22-year-old Christopher J. Harris as the victim of homicide Thursday at an apartment building at 3200 Linwood. Harris is from Grandview. Police arrived on the scene around 11:40 a.m. and discovered Harris’ body inside an apartment. Police say another shooting victim showed up at a local hospital. He is expected to be released from the hospital…

Jónsi at Liberty Hall

Scott Spychalski Jónsi Here’s a quick geography lesson: despite evidence to the contrary, Iceland really is just an island nation and not a planet in some far-off galaxy. To be fair, it’s not like the land of fire and ice has gone out of its way to reinforce this fact. When your country’s highway construction is routinely rerouted to avoid…

Best places in Kansas City for a picnic

Pass me a Nehi, Aunt LaVerne… In a perfect case of Murphy’s Law, this soggy, wet Friday in Kansas City just happens to be National Picnic Day. Am I the only person who thinks April is an odd month for this holiday? I won’t be packing a basket and dining al fresco today. But if the weather dries and the…

Couples that dress alike: Clothes Whores Pet Peeve No. 5

On the pet peeve ranking scale of 1 to 10, this one rates, oh, maybe a three. (Other pet peeves, like Crocs and Ed Hardy clothing, rank so off-the-chart high that they won’t be included in this compilation.) My married friends here — we’ll call them Jada and Will, because each is kind of a big deal here in town,…

Ted Leo’s “North Coast” worth tracking down

Ted Leo is something of a cover song artiste, and a man capable of covering nearly any track in the history of popular music, be it Tears For Fears for the AV Club or Kelly Clarkson for UGO. So, it must have been inevitable that something would eventually creep into his work. I’ve been rocking the b-sides single he release…

Fud opens on the West Side

Say hello to vegan comfort food, Kansas City. Chef-owner Heidi Van Pelt-Belle is now serving meatless tacos, lasagna and chicken-fried steak at her new West Side restaurant, Fud (813 W. 17th St.).  “Making a food that you grew up on be healthy and vegan — that’s my heart,” says Van Pelt-Belle, who runs the restaurant with her partner, Jerimiah Rozzo-Belle….

KC neighborhoods file nuisance suit against speculator

Several neighborhood groups have filed nuisance suits against Go Invest Wisely, a Utah company that bought foreclosed homes in the urban core of Kansas City in 2007 and 2008. Legal Aid of Western Missouri filed the suits on behalf of Ivanhoe, Blue Hills, Palestine and other neighborhoods in which Go Invest Wisely purchased homes for as little as $4,500. The…

Tien Tien needs a new tien-ant

Maybe a disco fried chicken and sushi palace? The last tenant of the free-standing building at 5400 West 95th Street in Prairie Village was the Tien Tien Pan-Asian Buffet. That was nearly two years ago. The venue looks forlorn, surrounded by overgrown grass and scraggly shrubs, but the interior was actually quite snazzy the last time I ate there, when…

The 10 most annoying habits of restaurant diners

While servers typically bear the brunt of customers’ annoyance at restaurants, other diners are just as likely to ruin a perfectly good meal through poor behavior or difficult ordering habits. The Chicago Tribune has a Top 10 List of the Most Annoying Habits of Restaurant Diners. I think I’ve been guilty of at least two on the list. Number 7…

Breakfast Buffet: Friday, April 23

%{}% A brief ode to Nutella, the chocolate hazelnut spread that can be breakfast or a snack. Olive oil is the latest ingredient for one homebrewer. We live in a weird world where an espresso maker, La Mazorcco, makes an iPhone app and I kinda way play around with it. KC Perky returns with a thumbs up for the coffee…

What to do this weekend

1. Celebrate the planet. Earth Day is one day past, but the Power & Light District nods to environmentalism today with Green the Core, a free, lunchtime festival with gifts for the first 500 guests. 2. Grease your hair — for Gear Grinder, a rockabilly music and car show at Knuckleheads today and Saturday. 3. Drink up. Parkville hosts its…

Tweets of the Week

If you’ve ever wondering about the Architects’ (@TheArchitectstKC) songwriting process, here’s a bit of insight. Just because the Get Up Kids (@tguk) are married and have kids doesn’t mean that they don’t worry about the usual rock ‘n’ roll issues. 50 Cent at the Midland, June 10

Lately, it seems that hip hop is finally moving to venue more suited to actual concerts. It used to be that if someone like 50 Cent would come through, they’d be stuck playing a dance club or some other venue totally unsuited to watching a live performance. Well, it only took, what, 30 years for concert promoters to finally treat…
