Download Come & Live’s Sampler

Chad Johnson signed Underoath, so it is unsurprising that he’s started a new record label that’s got quite a strong Christian focus. The new record label is called Come and Live and they are offering for download I Am Living Vol. 1, a free compilation featuring their artists all of which feature appropriately Biblical names like I Am Alpha and…

I Am A Patient Boy

I went to the dentist yesterday, and as the hygienist worked on scrubbing the coffee stains off my teeth, the radio was set on one of those “lite FM” stations, and I was subjected to a train of horrendous music: things like Jewel’s “Foolish Games,” which is actually not the worst thing I’ve ever had to hear in a doctor’s…

Killa City: Felix D. Rodriquez charged with killing Shirleen Brown

We now know the victim of last night’s homicide victim and suspect. Court records accuse 61-year-old Felix D. Rodriquez of killing Shirleen Brown. Jackson County prosecutors charged Rodriquez this afternoon with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Brown. According to the probable cause statement, Rodriquez told police “I shot my girlfriend” when they arrived at the…

Skyfox permanently grounded

Fox 4’s Skyfox helicopter is glued to the ground from here on, TV Barn reports. Sounds so familiar. Oh yeah, the station clipped the chopper’s wings in January while it looked for a sponsor. Guess Fox 4 didn’t get one. The reasons are what you’d expect: money and new technology. Poor Fox 4iors. No copter. No coffee. Mike “environmentalists are kinda…

Jeff Wood faces the Sound and the Jury

It’s nice when things come together with such wonderful synchronicity that trying to spin them into something clever is totally unnecessary. Case in point: Jeff Wood used to be in Kansas City’s the Sound and the Fury. Now, he’s competing as a solo artist for a spot on the Dell Stage at the Austin City Limits Festival. The name of…

Slideshow No. 2 from a long weekend: Santa-Cali-Gon Days

Santa-Cali-Gon Days, Independence’s annual festival celebrating its place in history as the starting point for the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails, was last week. Pitch Clubs Editor Berry Anderson was there to capture it all and put it in this slideshow, which includes a mohawk-sporting 3-year-old, foul-mouthed clowns and fried Pepsi. Deep Elm Records, purveyors of the finest in emo rock, offer up a free sampler. The label’s back in the swing of things after a bit of a hiatus, with eight releases set to be scheduled. Killa City: KCMO homicide No. 83, KC police involved in shooting Sunday; Exae Chavez-Gutierrez dead

The man shot and killed by police near 113th Street and Sycamore on Sunday was 36-year-old Exae Chavez-Gutierrez of Grandview, Missouri, police say. The officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave. They have 28 and 13 years of law enforcement experience — which is routine in these situations. Kansas City police says officers responded to a Jeep…

The kegerator evolves into a beer robot

We couldn’t let another country beat us to the moon. But we were scooped on a beer robot. The Asahi robot was part of a promotion for the Japanese brewer in 2006. The R2-D2-shaped bot would pour a tall cold one from a refrigerated compartment that could hold a six-pack and two frosty mugs — but it was only available…

Concert Review: Blink-182 and Weezer at Sandstone

BY ELKE MERMIS I don’t dig ’90s nostalgia. I find it creepy and unnecessary, and frankly, it makes me feel old as hell. But when bands like Blink-182 and Weezer roll around — on the same billing, no less — I’m more than willing to shake off my hang-ups, slather on the eyeliner and get a little angsty for the…

Concert Review: the Jacka at the National Guard Armory in KCK

Something special happened on Friday night at the National Guard Armory in Kansas City, Kansas. Call it a hip-hop Hallmark moment. There were about 75 to 100 people, mostly teenagers, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Jacka, a Bay Area rapper who for several years has successfully tunneled his way through hip-hop’s underground and who had come into KC for…

Pastrami: An endangered species?

It has not been a good year for delis in Kansas City. The New York Bakery and Delicatessen on Troost closed, as did Pumpernick’s Restaurant and Deli in Leawood. Maybe writer David Sax could have helped. He’s the author of Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye, and The Heart of The Jewish Delicatessen, an ode to…

When it’s time to party Abigail Blunt will party hard

Politico named Springfieldian Abigail Blunt one of the “Top 50 Party Animals” in Washington, D.C. Blunt is the wife of turd in Michael Steele’s crapper Roy Blunt. Here’s what Politico says makes the lobbyist for Kraft Food a D.C. party girl: Together, they are part of the old-school Georgetown social establishment, which keeps them in the pages of Washington’s glossy…

The cupcake has peaked

With the cupcake trend in full swing, one writer believes that all of the different iterations and new storefronts are leading to the bursting of the cupcake bubble. On Slate, Daniel Gross argues that cupcakes are a luxury item and all of the new options are reactionary, retro-fitted onto a pastry that is meant to be simple. “Indeed, they are…

12th Street bridge open … for now

%{}% Rejoice, West Bottomers. The 12th Street bridge is open again. It re-opened late last week while we were on holiday. The city had shut down the bridge after an expansion joint failed causing concrete to fall on a nearby hillside. Not good. Enjoy the bumpy, metal-plate-covered ride while you can. It’s bound to be closed again some time soon….

Down the hatch: Ooba Hibiscus With Lime

In an effort to counteract the Mountain Dew Voltage I tried at the end of last month, I thought I’d look into the latest superfood growth area: health beverages. First on the docket is Ooba, a sparkling drink made with hibiscus extract.  I’ve seen hibiscus-flavored drinks in Mexican restaurants; hibiscus is one of the many flavors of the Mexican soft…

Ssion Snapshots: Boy opening at Grand Arts

Boy, the brand-new, feature-length film by local music and art collective Ssion, debuted to a packed Tivoli last Thursday night. (Read our review.) The following Friday, September 4, Grand Arts, which funded the film, held a reception for the film, which is showing in the gallery through October 24. We got the hot pix. Ssion leader Cody Critcheloe (center) with…
