Jayhawks disown White Owl? KU’s No. 1 fan claims he was banned from campus

The man wants to ban White Owl from the University of Kansas’ campus. At least, that’s what White Owl — the 61-year-old, third-team mascot for the Jayhawks — claims. Who could doubt this man’s credibility? Well, the University of Kansas. That’s who. White Owl is spreading his sad(?) story of persecution at the hands of shadowy people. In the latest…

Reporter’s Notebook: Cynthia Canady’s work is never done

Don’t just whine about it — do something. The people featured in this week’s feature story spoke up in order to make the parks in this so-called City That Works actually work for them. In other words, they pulled a Cynthia Canady. This coming September will mark six years that Canady, a retiree of the GM assembly line, has tirelessly…

Task force recommends Sunnyside Park for off-leash dog park; Commissioner Stackhaus’ eyebrows beg to differ

Although Commissioner Aggie Stackhaus’ facial expressions nearly stole the show, dogs were the focus of this afternoon’s meeting of the Kansas City Parks and Recreation’s Board of Commissioners. Task force chairman Mel Solomon presented the Dog Park Task Force Advisory Committee’s report, saying, “More dog parks will add significant viability to our parks system.”  Among their findings: that a dog…

Tom Watson, man in full

Tom Watson’s admirers risk becoming hagiographers after his thrilling performance at the British Open. Kevin Kietzman opened his show on WHB 810 yesterday by recasting the golfer’s slump, which began in the mid 1980s, as a desire to spend time with family. “He said, ‘I’m having kids. I’m staying home. I’m not playing as much. I’m not gonna to do…

Got milk money?

Forget spilled milk — dairy farmers seem ready to spill blood. They’re seeing red because of declining raw milk prices, the result of a decrease in worldwide demand and a glut of milk production that was ramped up in expectation of greater demand that never materialized. Some groups are seeking legislative redress, while others feel that financial subsidies are the…

Gumby’s + Pita Pit + beer = Freshman 15

We’re learning a lot about life today. But here’s a lesson for incoming freshmen that’s nutritious and delicious: The University Daily Kansan tells us how to keep off the “freshman 15,” using this unlucky KU junior’s example: “I would eat Pita Pit and Gumby’s Pizza on a regular basis. Plus I consumed a lot of beer.” Oh, no. Dudes: light…

The Westside Local is open for business

The doors opened last Wednesday. The taps flowed on Friday. And the cicadas were singing by Sunday. Such is life in the beer garden at the Westside Local. “This space is as much yours as it is mine,” said proprietor Troy McEvers, who was operating on four hours sleep a night — the result of trying to get the Westside…

Concert Review: Gomez at the Beaumont Club

The instruments of rock at the Beaumont Club last night consisted of more than the usual drums, guitar and bass. For its headlining set, bluesy British rockers Gomez incorporated various kinds of shakers; a keyboard + blowing tube contraption (that broke by the end of the song) that I guess was a vocorder; a kazoo; and an iPhone. The stage…
