Appleseed Cast album out today, MP3 courtesy of Stereogum

What, Appleseed Cast? We’re not important enough? Why don’t WE get that exclusive MP3, why you gotta give it to the Stereogums and Pitchforks of the world? Just kidding. We’re perfectly happy to direct readers to this famous blog, where they can download the Appleseed’s new song, “A Bright Light,” from the brand-new LP Sagamartha, which is in stores today,…

Tonight! Greg Laswell at Czar Bar

Tonight at the Czar Bar, Vanguard Records recording artist Greg Laswell drops by. He’s a high-profile dude, a rock singer-songwriter comparable with the likes of Ron Sexsmith and Josh Rouse, he’s had his songs placed on tons of TV shows, and so I’m wondering why this show wasn’t promoted more. I found out about it only a few days ago….

You can spend 300k on dog jewelry?

www.spoilurpets.com There are things we remember from working at daily newspapers. We remember reporters shouting out bad puns for hours. We’d lay down money that when this story broke, at least one guy at the Rocky Mountain News suggested some variation of “Barking Up the Wrong Tree” for the headline while his co-workers politely ignored him. We’ll try to resist making…

It’s band-auction time again on KKFI.

Starting this Friday, February 20, and running through March 1, 90.1 FM KKFI (kkfi.org) will be auctioning off bands to play private parties, with proceeds going to the station. As of last week, the station had signed up more than 70 local bands. The rules, according to KKFI’s press release: “A local band or solo act donates a two hour…

Incoming: The Bronx to Riot Room

Fans of Fucked Up and all other punk-based, skull-cracking rock channelings take note: bad ass L.A. band the Bronx is headed for the Riot Room on April 10. The group is touring on the heels of its third self-titled release, Bronx (III). The last time the group came through, it played the Record Bar with the Architects, an early all-ages…

Gastrointestintal stuffed toys: urine luck!

Scarily, some of my friends are starting to have children. Being a creepy honorary uncle has its drawbacks, namely what to get these newborns. Should I get them an a full-bodied Chilean red or maybe a safe oak chardonnay from California? I kid, I kid. But shopping for young’ns is no walk in the park. You can’t go wrong with…

Kansas City schools’ response to teen sex? Just say no

Abstinence-until-marriage programs have come under criticism for teaching fear and fostering ignorance. In the sex issue, on streets now, I describe one curriculum, Choosing the Best, faulted in a 2004 congressional report for understating condoms’ effectiveness. Approved to receive federal funding, Choosing the Best is taught in many area classrooms, including the Kansas City, Missouri, School District. Kansas City schools…

The Academy Awards … and restaurants!

Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences This Sunday won’t be a terrific night for many restaurants — at least for the ones patronized by men and women devoted to staying home and watching the annual Academy Awards ceremony. Sunday night is the airing of the 81st annual award ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which…

Kansas City is a ghost town

I swear Forbes — and every other publication — hates Kansas City. The latest bit of shitty news: Forbes lumps KCMO and KCK together as the eighth emptiest city in America. So let’s recap: Dating in KC sucks. Kansas Citians are fat. No one wants to live here. Just great. Forbes used rental vacancy rates — 15.2 percent — and…

The Pitch’s 2009 DJ Contest Finalists Are….

… in no particular order … Shaun Duval Kiko De Gallo Scott Carpenter Jamel Rockwell Kipsquared We received around 20 submissions to our 2009 Pitch Ultra Music DJ Contest, and narrowing the list down to five was no easy task. So, heavy congrats to the beat-spanking DJs above. On Friday, March 6, at NV (220 Admiral Boulevard), we want YOU…

KGC doesn’t have the ring to it of KFC

Flickr: SamBeckWith It’s not a good sign for an idea when the first thing it’s compared to is New Coke. That’s exactly what’s happened with Kentucky Fried Chicken’s decision to rebrand some of its stores Kentucky Grilled Chicken last March. The idea was widely ridiculed. After all, KFC’s entire stores are about fried chicken. Colonel Sander’s recipe is held in…

Early frontrunner for jackass of 2009

Flickr: KMountMan It’s a pain but many restaurants require credit cards when making reservations. Especially on busy holidays like Valentine’s, and that makes regular patrons angry. But there is a reason for this. Many reasons in fact. Such as this gentleman low-down-good-for-nothing jerk in Des Moines who made reservations at 10 restaurants on Valentine’s. Yes, 10!  From the Des Moines…

NPR reruns KC gangland piece

I’d never heard NPR’s “Kansas City’s wholesome image belies mob past” piece, but yesterday “Day to Day” reran the September 2007 show. It’s a quick, six-minute tour of KC’s seedy mob past. Makes me want to take the tour. Hat tip to TKC. Categories: News Tags: Day to Day, mafia, mob, NPR

More local food in the next four years?

If you’re at all interested in local food programs, organic food or pretty much anything having to do with the sources of food, then listen to this interview of author Michael Pollan, which aired on Fresh Air yesterday and is now available on NPR’s Web site. Pollan summarizes in 25 minutes a lot of what was covered at the 2009…

Now open: Chaz

Today marks the grand-opening of Chaz in the Raphael Hotel. Six weeks ago Chaz was known by the name Raphael Restaurant, but that was before a complete overhaul of the interior and menu. Chaz is located on a lower level of the hotel and has its own entrance on the west side. I can’t claim to be too familiar with…

Breakfast Buffet: 02/17

%{}% If a day without chocolate is like a day without sunshine then you probably shouldn’t read this article on the world’s delicious chocolate disappearing. Cool ways (read: high-tech savvy ways) in which people propose. The Jumbotron proposal is still classiest. There’s trouble brewing in wine world as more wineries decide to opt out of ubercritic Robert Parker’s rating system….

Was this an appropritate use of force?

KSHB captured some disturbing video following a high-speed chase yesterday. The footage, shot from KSHB’s Skytracker helicopter, shows a man surrendering, lying face down on the ground with his hands behind his head. An officer seems to have him subdued when another runs up and repeatedly punches the guy in the head. Other officers swarm the guy. An officer by…

The Download: New J. Period & Q-Tip Mixtape

For the past month, DJ and remix artist J. Period has been leaking bits and pieces from his tribute to the former A Tribe Called Quest member and current solo artist Q-Tip. He made the entire mixtape available last Tuesday and by Thursday, it had been downloaded over 20,000 times. Along with Q-Tip’s timeless prose, the release includes a star-studded…

KC’s library is the sixth strangest building in the world?

I’m pretty sure Justin Moss has never seen the Kansas City Public Library (pictured above) in person. Moss compiled a list of “The 15 Strangest Buildings of the World” and named KC’s library the world’s sixth strangest. Actually, the building he’s thinking of is across the street.   Uh, Justin. That’s the parking garage. Categories: News Tags: Justin Moss, kansas…

Dame Edna’s Nutrition Advice

Legendary comedienne Dame Edna Everage celebrates her 75th birthday today. The secret to her longevity, she reports, includes eating sensibly: “Meat in moderation, cake the rest of the time.” Although Dame Edna was hired, in 2006, to participate in a campaign to encourage Australians to eat more fruits and vegetables, she has other, less traditional, nutritional ideas. “Vomiting,” the youthful-looking septugenarian…
