The Park Place shopping complex keeps getting closer to becoming a destination dining spot in Leawood. Today marks the opening of RA Sushi (11638 Ash Street).

“There’s nothing like this out in south Kansas City. RA will be a destination point, a place to be seen,” says manager Tony Rohn, who has previously worked at the Kona Grill and Sol Cantina.

The most obvious spot for people-watching is the sushi bar, which runs nearly the length of the dining room and features four stations. RA also has a patio for outdoor dining with 20 seats just off the bar area, accessible via sliding doors.

There’s a large sushi menu, but the signature roll is the Tootsy Maki: crab mix, shrimp and cucumber, rolled and topped with crunchy tempura bits and drizzled with a sweet eel sauce. Vegetarians might opt for the Yellow Monkey Roll — roasted red peppers, marinated artichokes and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed, topped with mango and cashews, and drizzled with kiwi-wasabi and mango sauce.

“People who don’t eat sushi will still be very happy here,” says Rohn.

For those who don’t partake, RA’s menu has a series of traditional cooked Japanese options from chicken katsu (breaded and fried chicken breast served with wasabi mashed potatoes) to bento boxes with beef or chicken teriyaki).
