Platte County to take blood samples from DUI suspects that won’t blow

If you’re suspected of DUI in Platte County and don’t want to give a breath sample, you better be ready to give blood. The Kansas City Star reports that the county will be the first near Kansas City to obtain blood samples from DUI suspects who refuse to take a breathalyzer.

It had been illegal to take a blood sample without a search warrant, but the state Legislature passed a law last year clearing the way for police to draw blood without a judge’s order.

Now, when a DUI suspect chooses not to take a breath test, a nurse will be summoned to Platte County Detention Center, Kansas City North Patrol Division or Riverside Police Department, to take the sample, the paper reports.
