KC Sipps: Kansas City bars and cafes invite you into their creativity this weekend
This week's Kansas City restaurant news.
Life in KC is pretty delicious. In fact, there is often so much going on that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to try.
That’s where I come in.
I’ve curated this weekly list of events, openings, deals, and celebrations to keep you in-the-know. Cheers!
Something New
News Bites: The Dub, KC’s first women’s sports bar, is celebrating its first birthday all weekend. They’ve packed the weekend with events to celebrate their rookie year, from sports watch parties (Chiefs included), drag performances, curated vendors, live music, trivia, and more.
October 15
The Antler Room: Congratulations, Antler Room team, on reaching 10 years. To celebrate, they’re throwing a special dinner with Vine Street Imports. Tickets are $150 and include a welcome cocktail and a four-course dinner featuring favorite dishes through the years, as well as wine pairings. A few late reservation times are still available at the time of publishing.
October 16
Gnarly Hussle: The thrift store/bar in Raytown has entered the girl dinner game — but in a cool, unique fashion as only Gnarly Hussle can do. They’re further leaning into the girl dinner zeitgeist with their Gilmore Girls-themed Mandatory Friday Night Dinner. On October 16 and 30, with additional Fridays in November, Gnarly Hussle will screen Gilmore Girls, offer a “Caesar’s salad” and fries, and your choice of a cleverly themed cocktail at 7 p.m.
October 17
Café Cà Phê: At the Columbus Park coffee shop, Café Cà Phê is hosting a celebration of Wasteland Society’s 9-year anniversary. Wasteland will be on site with their gritty and outspoken (and award-winning!) clothing designs from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Café Cà Phê has a special drink for the day, and it happens to be one of my favorite combinations: espresso and cola. Chingu and J. Chang Kitchen, aka KC’s “Asian Uncles,” have teamed up to bring a menu that I expect to sell out quickly, so it may be smart to plan on being in line by 11 a.m. The five-spice chicken sandwich is calling my name. Additionally, Mochinut, Old Souls Tattoo, Virgil’s Plant Bus, and more will be available.
Café Corazón: CaféCITÓN is back, this time for a Día de los Muertos celebration. From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., the Crossroads location of Café Corazón, stop by for specialty drinks, DJs, 13 vendors, dancing, and more! No ticket or admission required.
October 18
Slow Roll Subs: Slow Roll Subs will hold their second pop-up, this time at Jade Jaguar. Starting at 5 p.m., Slow Roll will be at the Crossroads bar slinging four varieties of sandwiches on their signature fresh bread. Their namesake sandwich, the slow roll, has mortadella, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, hot peppers, arugula, cucumbers, shallots, and chimichurri dressing.
October 19
Jade Market: The new Columbus Park store from Hella Good Deeds, Jade Market, invites you to learn and enjoy the game of Hangzhou Mahjong. The tile game is booming in popularity in the United States, and here’s a chance to learn. The evening includes instruction and gameplay, plus a matcha from Café Cà Phê across the street, and an opportunity to shop Jade Market — perfect for selecting a snack during the game. Tickets are $55.
Plan Ahead
Lonnie’s Reno Club: While Lonnie’s standard live jazz show deserves a spot on your KC bucket list, this event is a little different. On October 22, you’ll miss the tap shoes and trumpets, but the jazz club in the basement of The Ambassador Hotel has a special night in store. They’ll be showing Ratatouille and serving six courses and drink pairings that align with the movie. This film-to-fork experience has a few seats left and costs $95.
