Jazz Beat: Eboni Fondren, with the Joe Cartwright Trio
You’ve heard Eboni Fondren. She is the female voice asking you to turn off your phone before the start of every movie at every AMC theater. She has done voiceovers for TV commercials. She has sung in shows with the Kansas City Repertory Theatre and at the New Theatre Restaurant. She co-hosts the weekly public-radio jazz-and-comedy series 12th Street Jump. But the best place to hear her is sitting back in a jazz club. Fondren is one of the most successful disiciples of Kansas City organ master Everett DeVan, who has trained a score of female vocalists. Her precise readings of jazz standards, which she seasons with a dash of R&B, fill a room with energy and delight. On Friday, Fondren joins the trio led by fellow 12th Street Jump regular pianist Joe Cartwright at the Green Lady Lounge. Do turn off that cell phone.
