St. Louis Cardinals fans suck at grammar

St. Louis Cardinals fans cultivate a reputation for being the most knowledgeable in baseball. It’s to the point that the hashtag #bfib (best fans in baseball) is sometimes used ironically, as in How’d that sweep taste, #bfib #GoCubs.

Turns out, Cardinals fans are the best at something else: terrible grammar.

The writing app Grammarly analyzed the comments left on stories at Major League Baseball team websites. Grammarly counted the grammar mistakes and determined that the comments on the Cardinals’ site were the most error-prone. Grammarly found 2.20 errors per 100 words.

Royals fans, by contrast, leave much cleaner copy when they take to the comments section. The analysis found 1.66 errors per 100 words in the comments on KC’s website, which is seventh-best among the 30 teams in Major League Baseball. If Ned Yost disregards the suggestions left in the comments, at least fans are articulating clearly where they think Alcides Escobar should bat in the lineup.

The Miami Marlins’ fan base finished first, suggesting that having a horrible owner correlates with a keen eye for dangling participles.
