Kate Spade has died

Fashion designer and Kansas City native Kate Spade was found dead in her Manhattan apartment this morning of an apparent suicide. She was 55. Spade attended St. Teresa’s Academy and the University of Kansas before moving to New York City and joining the magazine Mademoiselle. In 1993, she and her husband, Andy Spade, started her eponymous handbag line. It was an…

Negroni Week, beer dinners galore, and Craft KC: Kansas City food and drink events for June 4-11

Monday, June 4Negroni Week officially kicks off today and runs through Sunday, June 10. For the unfamiliar, participating bars and restaurants offer their spin on this classic cocktail, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting charity (this year’s Kansas City beneficiary is the Newhouse Shelter, a haven for women and children escaping domestic violence). Questionnaire: Kansas Citian and RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant (and former minister) Monique Heart, performing this weekend at KC Pride Fest

Monique Heart — the drag persona of Kansas City’s Kevin Richardson — brought what she calls a “glam-look queen on a budget” to Season 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. While many queens on the show come prepared with pre-made outfits and lavish designs, Heart’s limited resources forced her to get creative. Though she finished eighth, Heart’s sass, craft, and highly…

Tonganoxie’s revamped Myers Hotel is a townie bar worth the drive

Six months ago, Kate Frick started the liquidation process on the Myers Hotel Bar, the Tonganoxie smart-cocktails destination she opened in 2015. Frick’s landlord had sold the property, and a new lease wasn’t forthcoming. She sold off the bar’s equipment, furniture, decorations — even the plants. Closing time. Then something unexpected happened. The building’s new owner, Doug Dowell, of Overland Park,…

Dear Dan: I am a 38-year-old gay man with a serious problem. My boyfriend of five years has developed a strange fascination. We’ve always watched porn together, but now he has been looking at straight porn and even lesbian porn (!!!) more and more often. More than once he has expressed an interest in having a MMF threesome — and…

There ain’t any lip-syncing on Miss Daisy Buckët’s debut album

It’s a chilly, late-March afternoon up on the roof of the new Messenger Coffee headquarters in the Crossroads. Spencer Brown is sipping coffee and wearing a hoodie over a denim jacket covered in enamel pins — a far cry from the ornate gowns and fancy cocktails favored by Brown’s alter ego, the drag performer known as Miss Daisy Buckët. The…

A whole bunch of celebrities are in Kansas City this weekend

You’ll need relatively deep pockets to attend several of the events affiliated with this weekend’s Big Slick, the annual Children’s Mercy fundraiser featuring Hollywood-funnymen-with-KC-roots Paul Rudd, Rob Riggle, Eric Stonestreet, David Koechner, and Jason Sudeikis. But the financially average among us can worm our way into a few things. A ticket to the Royals vs. Oakland Athletics game on Friday night…
