Parallels bring melancholic electro to RecordBar tonight

Holly Dodson is no Alice Glass. Parallels kicked off when Cameron Findlay, former drummer of electro-thrash hipster touchstone Crystal Castles, chose to pursue a solo career and bailed on that band after its world tour in 2008. He and Dodson began to vibe when the duo went to a Bowie concert together. After that, everything was melancholic, disco-flavored gravy, so…

Kansas medical marijuana bill dead for this year as med Mary J industry thrives

The Wichita Eagle’s RSS news feed was trying to send the state of Kansas a message today with these two conflicting headlines: “Kansas medical pot measure languishes” and “Medical marijuana industry thriving.” Kansas state Rep. Gail Finney’s medical marijuana bill didn’t get out of committee because of regressive lawmakers like House speaker Mike O’Neal and Human Services Committee Chair Brenda…

Kansas woman saved from pet python’s jaws

A Kansas woman was attacked by her 8-foot albino python earlier this week. The python grabbed the woman by the neck and latched on when the woman tried to feed it, the Hutchinson News reported. In what must have been a truly terrifying scene, the woman’s children called 911. Officer Max Bryant grabbed the snake by the snout and lower…

One person has been charged in Wednesday’s gunfight near a day-care center at 38th and Troost. Everett Dennis, 21, is charged with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action. Dennis, who apparently goes by the name “Too Tall,” was allegedly approached by two men. One of the men asked Dennis…

Scott Wilson named editor of The Pitch

On March 18, Village Voice Media LLC sold The Pitch to Nashville, Tennessee-based SouthComm Inc. Scott Wilson was named acting editor. I’m happy to say that we can drop the “acting” tag. Wilson was named editor of the paper on Thursday. A Kansas City native, he had previously served as managing editor. After five years as a freelance writer for…

Tune-Yards and Here We Go Magic turn lo-fi to hi-fi at the Jackpot

Merrill Garbus, better known to fans by her stage name Tune-Yards (or any variant of that, a la tUnE-YaRdS), is a bit of a one-woman tour-de-force indie outfit who manipulates lo-fi live techniques to produce rich and layered sound. Using drum loops, her ukulele, vocal stylings, and electronic bass (often played by friend and bassist Nate Brenner), Garbus has garnered…

B Bop Comics’ midtown shop closing April 23

Back in January, we learned that B Bop Comics’ midtown shop was closing. But we didn’t know an exact end date. We know it now, and the end is near. In a letter to customers, B Bop owner Frank Mangiaracina wrote that after 11 years, the midtown store’s doors will close on April 23 (the B Bop shops at 95th…

Perv alert! KU peeper likes to watch women shower

There’s a peeper on the loose at the University of Kansas. Three times this week, a guy pulled back shower curtains and watched women shower at dorms. Because life isn’t a teen comedy or a porno, the women were understandably creeped out. The first incident was Monday on the fourth floor of Hashinger Hall. The guy opened a shower curtain…

Josh Selby going pro is a mistake, but good for KU

Josh Selby had a lot more to prove at KU. In half a season, Selby didn’t look like a one-and-done player or surefire first-round pick. He averaged just under eight points a game, shot really poorly (37.3 percent) and was slowed by injuries. He didn’t look like the No. 1 player in the class of 2010. For a guy projecting…

What makes a given restaurant location cursed?

Do you ever worry that a restaurant will be closing before it has even opened? There are locations across the city that feel cursed, destined to be a revolving door of concepts and hopeful restaurateurs. Fat City is hopeful that the Marrakech Cafe can overcome the hex at 4116 Broadway, where a Cuban restaurant, hot-dog joint, Mexican breakfast restaurant, Bavarian…

Subhumans bring punk fury back to Kansas City

Subhumans surfaced as part of Britain’s post-’77 punk scene. The band’s fast, political records helped define the early days of hardcore and created the subgenre known as anarcho-punk (which owes more to lyrical content than to a particular sonic aesthetic). Like many bands of that era, Subhumans had a short run, breaking up in 1985. The band re-formed in 1998…

Southwest’s planetarium: one more casualty of this school year

Did your public high school have a planetarium? Yeah, mine didn’t either. But Southwest High School has a fully operational Spitz 512 Planetarium projector capable of displaying the positions in the sky of all the visible planets, the sun and the moon. Or it did have that, anyway. Categories: News Tags: Bob Riddle, John Covington, planetarium, Southwest Early College Campus

The Bread! project combines food, art and community

It’s not too late — but almost — to make a reservation to the sixth edition of Bread! That’s the art project conceived last year by 2010 Kansas City Art Institute graduate Sean Starowitz (who has since partnered with Andrew Erdrich and Joy Costa) to create funding for local artists by hosting a dinner. The next one is this Sunday,…

Texas sex offender captured in Topeka — 11 years after his conviction

On the run from the authorities? Need some cash? Topeka calls you! Kansas’ seat of government may not be a cosmopolitan vacation destination, but it’s a fine place to hide for about a decade. That’s what convicted child molester Jose Juan Sandoval discovered after he fled El Paso in 1999. Sandoval, 41, was arrested in Topeka this week, where he…
