Marcus Morris makes the cover of Sports Illustrated … regionally

Kansas Jayhawk Marcus Morris added another accolade this week: the cover of Sports Illustrated. The mag previewing the 2011 NCAA Tournament features Morris and will be distributed regionally. SB Nation Kansas City reports that Morris, the Big 12 Player of the Year, joins fellow regional cover boys Kemba Walker of UConn and Nolan Smith of Duke. For the sake of…

Celebrate the Ides of March with Caesar … salad

Yes, we know that the Caesar who was murdered on the “ides of March” — March 15, 44 B.C. — wasn’t the same Caesar as the inventor of the famous salad of the same name: an Italian-born Mexican, Caesar Cardini. But Cardini was, undoubtedly, named for the ill-fated Roman emperor assassinated on this date in history. So it’s fitting that…

Walt Bodine ate here! (Really, he did)

It’s been a long, long time since anyone ordered a cheeseburger in this long-vacant building, on the southwest corner of Linwood Boulevard and Troost. But back when it was a Katz Drugstore, there used to be a snappy lunch counter. The structure, which dates back to the mid-1930s, still has some fabulous Art Deco details. Wouldn’t it make a great…

Kevin Smith’s Q&A with ex-Westboro Baptist Church members (video)

If you missed the Kansas City premiere of Kevin Smith’s Westboro Baptist Church inspired movie, you also missed Smith doing a post-show Q&A with ex-church members Josh Phelps-Roper and Libby Phelps. Thankfully, God doesn’t hate YouTube. The seven-minute video of Smith’s onstage interview with the defectors is now on the site (and you can watch it after the jump). Josh,…

Bad band name trends — and the KC bands that have ’em

The Washington Post recently published a very spot-on opinion piece questioning whether this is the worst era for band names ever. (Oof.) There are several notable trends that they spotted from perusing the 2011 South by Southwest roster — and there are more than a few Kansas City bands that are sporting the same band name trends. Categories: Music Tags:…

Kansas City is the 52nd most socially networked city

Researchers at Men’s Health magazine took time off from working on their six-packs and popping V’s to grade the most socially networked cities in America. Kansas City, we’re just average. Men’s Health gave KC a C grade, which places Kansas City at No. 52 on the list. We’re far behind the rest of the country, including St. Louis (B grade),…

New tunes from Rooftop Vigilantes

I’ve been hankering for Rooftop Vigilantes’ second LP, Real Pony Glue, ever since I fell in love with their debut, Carrot Atlas, and caught wind that the sophomore album was in some weird kinda limbo. It’s unfortunate, because many of the new tunes, played live, sound fucking great — tighter, leaner, more altogether whole. Well, while we wait for the…

How to trap a foodie

Some enterprising artists in New York City have created the means to catch a wild hipster in a bear trap. The bait, as shown on Buzzfeed (pictured above), is a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, a bike chain, American Spirit cigarettes and a cheap pair of pink sunglasses. Some might argue that we have a few hipsters who need to…

Felipe Herrera-Quintana is Kansas City, Kansas’ ninth homicide victim of 2011

Last Friday afternoon, Kansas City, Kansas, police were called to a burglary at North 10th and Ford. There they found the body of 54-year-old Felipe Herrera-Quintana, who had been shot to death. Herrera-Quintana’s killing is especially depressing after reading KMBC’s report. A neighbor told the TV station that Herrera-Quintana and his wife were “inseparable.” Categories: News Tags: Felipe Herrera-Quintana, homicide

Who’s got the best tuna melt in Kansas City?

A few years back, I walked into Subway right after they began installing mini ovens and asking if you wanted every sandwich toasted. I ordered a tuna sub and was caught off-guard when the sandwich artist asked if I wanted it hot. “Would you get it toasted?” I asked “Nah, man,” he replied.   “Then, no thanks.” “Good choice.” This…

Virgil Peck, Kansas lawmaker, suggests hunting (and killing) illegal immigrants like ‘feral hogs’

Kansas state Rep. Virgil Peck (R-Racistville) is a stupid, stupid man. He has to be to even joke about using hunters in helicopters to kill illegal immigrants. Murder is soooooooo hilarious. According to The Kansas City Star, during a House Appropriations Committee discussion of controlling feral swine, a committee member discussed how hunters in helicopters are used to control the…

Todd Akin’s ‘true patriots’ don’t stand a chance against Hulk Hogan’s ‘real Americans’

Congressman Todd Akin must think Republicans retaking the House looked something like Saving Private Ryan. Do you remember when the patriots stormed the beaches and retook the House? I don’t either. But in Akin’s cinematic (and imaginative) mind, that’s what happened. I’m sure he re-enacted it with his GI Joes. Akin put all of this on display in an ad…
