University of Kansas frat boys get probation for paddling each other

Frat boys at the University of Kansas who smacked each other’s asses with paddles have been placed on a two-year probation, and have received other sanctions, the University Daily Kansan reported. And, no, a paddling is not among the sanctions. Last November, KU’s Interfraternity Council violated the university’s anti-hazing policy when members of the council’s executive board smacked each other’s…

Hidden Pictures’ video release party for ‘Anne Apparently’ is tonight

Local pop act Hidden Pictures has a new criminally adorable video that they’re releasing tonight: it’s a library romance, accompanied by one of the band’s catchiest tunes, “Anne Apparently.” The band is playing a release show tonight at the Replay Lounge, with Making Movies. And it’s only three bucks!  Categories: Music Tags: aren’t we clever, hidden pictures, making movies

Unknown Stuntman takes one last leap this Friday

In the past decade, I’ve probably seen Lawrence’s Unknown Stuntman more than any other local act (with the possible exception of the Spook Lights). The band formed in 2002 and was somewhat of a local punk-rock supergroup, with members hailing from Speed Dog Champion, pop-punkers mi6, streetpunk act Kelly’s Heroes, and Manhattan snotty punks Jiffy Boy and Sense of Self….

Tom Schweich, Missouri auditor, huffs at suggestion he’s playing dumb

Tom Schweich, Missouri’s new auditor, wussed out of an assignment, and he’s rejecting criticism that he did it for political reasons. Citing uncertainty, Schweich says he cannot calculate the budgetary implications of a scheme to replace the state’s income tax with a higher sales tax, a fancy of retired investor (and Schweich campaign contributor) Rex Sinquefield. House Minority Leader Mike…

Why grocery stores offer you free samples

I’d like to go back to a more innocent time when I was excited to see a slice of cheesecake in a paper cup or be handed a stack of veggie chips that I didn’t really want to eat. Sample day at grocery stores and superstores was a wonderful day — a time when shades of the Old Country Buffet…

Five campaign ideas for Barkley and On the Border

They likely won’t have to cater the Christmas party at Barkley this year. Because we’re good neighbors, Fat City shared a few ideas…

Someone on City Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks’ campaign team really knows their way around public records. Brooks, the incumbent, is contesting the residency of Michael Fletcher, one of her opponents in the 3rd District City Council race. Through her attorney, Phil Willoughby, Brooks filed a petition in Jackson County Circuit Court that cites excerpts of legal pleadings Fletcher filed in…

Kansas City’s public schools don’t have the best reputation, so it’s no wonder so many families have turned to charter schools. Enrollment at charter schools in KC has more than doubled since the schools first opened. But a report from the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools says that Missouri’s charter schools are actually just as bad as the public…
