Brad Lager gets his pork butt handed to him by angry Savannah residents

Last week, Missouri state Sen. Brad Lager faced the wrath of nearly 100 angry people who were gathered at the firehouse on Savannah, Missouri’s main drag. The residents of Savannah — a rural, bedroom community just north of St. Joseph — hurled questions at the lawmaker concerning his bill that would significantly impact property owners’ rights to sue the operators…

Where to find ‘weird’ chef favorites in Kansas City

Yesterday, eater.com posted a story titled, “Ten strange chefs favorites that are now mainstream hits,” which listed some vintage menu favorites — oysters Rockefeller, beef tongue, pretzels, Waldorf salad — that are having a revival in New York restaurants. I’m not sure that any of the selections really qualify as weird, but some of them are rarely seen on modern…

Moses Kushaba, gay Ugandan, worships at IHOP in effort to pressure Lou Engle

A gay man who fled Uganda attended services at the International House of Prayer on Sunday in an effort to pressure Lou Engle, a member of the church’s leadership and a frothy-mouthed opponent of homosexuality. Being gay is a crime in Uganda. Engle traveled to the country last year and appeared at a prayer rally as lawmakers weighed even harsher…

The Ke$ha Diaries: Uncensored

Ke$ha, with BeardoSunday, February 20, 2011The Midland Note: It’s rare to find a music critic in completely inebriated, uncensored form. What follows are my uncut, unedited notes of Ke$ha’s severely under-aged, sold-out show at the Midland on Sunday night, in which I encounter the true essence of slutwave. Proceed with caution. Upon stumbling up to the Midland with heels, red…

OK, 39th Street corridor, we need cookies on a string

You’ve just stopped into Gilhouly’s, the neighborhood bar across from d’Bronx on 39th Street. And, as can happen at a place like that, the pledge to drink just one beer has been left behind at least two beers ago. You flip open your cell phone, and it’s then that you notice a string hanging from an apartment window. A small…

Anonymous says they are NOT threatening Westboro Baptist Church

When Internet hacker Anonymous supposedly threatened to destroy Topeka’s gay-hating Westboro Baptist Church online over the weekend, the reaction was mixed at best. Sure, we could get behind protesting Scientology offices in 2008 because of their litigious attitude toward any speech they don’t like, and there were good pro-freedom reasons to defend their recent attacks on Visa and MasterCard. Taking…

Exile on Main Street brings the best of KC to Crosstown Station

Exile on Main Street: A Tribute to the Rolling Stones February 18, 2011 Crosstown Station Better than: the Stones could have imagined pulling off themselves. (As Bill Sundahl read at the beginning of the show, Mick Jagger said only about four of the songs could be played live.) During that insistent horn, guitar and everybody-sing-one-word refrain that carries it home,…

Total bliss, insane energy from Thee Oh Sees at The Granada on Friday night

Thee Oh Sees Friday, February 18, 2011 The Granada Hearing people in a crowd murmur “Thee Oh Sees” confuses one’s brain. After a while, everyone sounds like they’re saying, “Oh, see?” over and over. You catch yourself looking around to see what people are talking about. (Could it be that group of people attempting to thrash-dance? Perhaps they’re looking at…

MidCoast Takeover throws first benefit show tonight

In an effort to raise enough money to pull off the two-day Kansas City showcase extravaganza at South by Southwest this year, the MidCoast Takeover (which recently added local juggernauts the Republic Tigers and Beautiful Bodies to their lineup) is hosting a series of benefit shows featuring the local acts that will be traveling to Austin with them. Tonight, the…

Tiffany Campbell tells Kansas lawmakers why she had an abortion; were they listening?

A former Olathe woman bravely explained to lawmakers why she had an abortion five years ago during testimony Thursday for a bill that would ban abortions after 22 weeks. Republican lawmakers claim that fetuses can feel pain at that time. Tiffany Campbell testified before the House Federal and State Affairs Committee, the Wichita Eagle reports, and she told lawmakers that…

What makes a really great restaurant host?

I’ve worked with all kinds of restaurant hosts and hostesses over the years, including bratty teenagers, college students, actors and actresses, at least one drag queen, and the weird neurotic fashion plate who told everyone that he had both law and medical degrees and was working for minimum wage because, well, it was fun. Hey, it takes all kinds of…
