Motorhead to burn down the Midland Theater in February

British rawk lifers Motorhead (unable to locate the umlaut key on my laptop) will release their new album, The World Is Yours, on February 8. Two weeks later, Lemmy & Co. will visit the Midland to play some of those new songs and presumably more than a few of their balls-out metal-punk anthems.  Categories: Music Tags: Midland Theatre, motorhead

Otto’s has left Czar Bar, will reopen in midtown in 2011

Otto’s will once again be a stand-alone restaurant. JohnEric asked in the comments of our year-end restauarant-closing round-up about the hamburger stand, and sadly Otto’s has to be added to that list. Otto’s Original Burger and Malt @Czar Bar closed on December 3, but the burger and shake spot will tentatively reopen as Otto & Ruthie’s in midtown next April…

Derek Hardin accused of killing man in 2003

On the day after what would have been Chauncey Calhoun’s 28th birthday, Kansas City police officers arrested the man they believe killed him. Derek Hardin was arrested on November 22nd of this year for the September 2003 homicide. Calhoun, 20, was shot several times while sitting in the passenger seat of a car at 15th Terrace and Woodland on September…

Your black coffee from the man who brought you White Zombie

Horror movie impresario and heavy metal icon Rob Zombie is now a coffee roaster? LA Weekly’s Squid Ink reports that Zombie is now selling a pair of organic, free-trade certified coffees. You can choose from a pound of Hellbilly Brew Peru or Hellbilly Brew Dark French Roast for $13.99. Although this won’t be a White Zombie Christmas as the whole…

Is Larry Flynt trying to poach Missouri’s strippers?

It feels like things at the strip clubs have finally leveled off after cock goblin Matt Bartle tried to kill them earlier this year by banning bare breasts. Seriously, go into Bazooka’s or Shady Lady some weekend. You’ll be surprised at how much room that law gives them to work in, now that they know how to do it. Also,…

What was making news this week in 1883 Kansas

Awesome news for newspaper nerds. The Library of Congress has released a bunch of old Kansas newspapers online, and it’s freaking fascinating. Now let’s all readjust our crotchal areas and dig in. On December 20, 1883, The Wichita Eagle was reporting on a broad range of news and opinion. The only major disappointment of sifting through the ancient fish wrap…

Return to Sender

Editor’s note: Eight months ago, in part as a response to Arizona’s enactment of a law requiring its police to ask anyone they think might be here illegally (read: Mexicans) to produce proof of legal status, Village Voice Media embarked on an extensive national immigration project. It tasked VVM papers across the country with telling the stories of the Hispanics…

Comment of the Day: Boycott Missouri?

The state of Missouri is denying survivor benefits to the partner of a Missouri Highway Patrolman killed in the line of duty — on Christmas Day last year, no less. The state dedicated a stretch of Interstate 44 to Cpl. Dennis Engelhard, who died while trying to help a motorist. While honoring Engelhard, the state is still denying benefits to…

Damarion Walker, 3-month-old, has shaken-baby syndrome, doctors say; mother doesn’t believe them

Three-month old Damarion Walker has a blood clot on his brain, two broken femurs and an injured wrist. His injuries have been called “critical,” and doctors believe his injuries are a case of “shaken- baby syndrome.” KMBC Channel 9 interviewed Damarion’s mother, Kinsey Starling, who told reporter Peggy Breit that she was shocked when authorities charged Damarion’s father, Greg Walker,…

Restaurant closings in 2010: The good, the bad and the ugly

The year 2010 may go down in history as having the shortest-lived “closing” in local restaurant history: Tom Johnson’s Sushi House “closed” on a Saturday night in October (well, that’s what the staff told the customers for much of that week) and “re-opened,” without fanfare, the following Tuesday. Fans of the restaurant were thrilled with the news, so I suppose…

Missouri’s 15 worst charities, according to Attorney General Chris Koster

This is the season of giving. But if you’re going to give, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster says you shouldn’t give to these 15 charities, which he dubbed “Missouri’s 15 Worst Charities.” The title is a little deceiving. These charities aren’t based in the Show-Me State, but they have operated or are operating here. And, according to Koster, they all…

No plans for Christmas Day? Go out to eat!

It’s not easy finding a restaurant open on Christmas Day. There are plenty of places serving on Christmas Eve, but on the actual holiday — this Saturday — the dining choices can be slim pickings. But here are a few suggestions for those hopeful diners who waited until the very last minute to get an invitation for Christmas dinner…and didn’t…

Police: One in every 130 Kansas Citians is in a street gang

The Kansas City Police Department is exploring some new ways to tackle local gang violence, which — especially after local luminaries got in a gun fight outside a funeral the other day — seems like a decent enough idea. The plan — which involves engaging federal prosecutors and cracking down on the gangs’ drug trade — seems to have potential,…

Thomas Jones gets loved on by the New York Times

In Saturday’s edition of The New York Times, sports writer Greg Bishop gushed over the Kansas City Chiefs’ Thomas Jones. The following day, the running back broke 10,000 career rushing yards in the team’s win over the St. Louis Rams. Jones is “thriving” in Kansas City, Bishop writes, and that’s really saying something, considering that the 32-year-old Virginia native has…

Missouri’s plan to put Enhanced Security Tabs on your car is laughable

Since people get their vehicle registration sticker ripped right off the plate every day in Missouri, and especially in the metro, the state’s Department of Revenue has announced a supposedly great idea to deter theft and make it easier for cops to tell if you’re driving around with stolen tags. With the Enhanced Security Tabs — announced just a month…

A different spin on baked brie

Tis the season when you hope to discover that your friends’ plans for holiday entertaining include baked brie. After it’s served, you simply need a few moments alone in the living room so you can shovel crackers in your face and eat more of the circular gooey cheese than you’d admit under oath. But sadly, unlike asiago, brie isn’t on…

Missouri loses congressional seat, and Democrats are likely the losers

Missouri, you’re the political loser of the day. The Show-Me State is losing a congressional seat (as well as one vote in the Electoral College) come 2012 after Census Bureau figures were released Tuesday (Illinois also lost a seat, but they’ll still have 18). Missouri will drop from nine to eight congressional seats, and you can bet statehouse Republicans have…
