A day in Kansas City with Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch

Kansas City is no stranger to visits from famous celebrities, especially musicians. But what if one such musician asked you to show off the city, through your own eyes, in one whirlwind of a day? Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch has done just that. In conjunction with the release of their latest album, Belle & Sebastian Write About Love, the…

Bobby Watson and his ‘Gates BBQ Suite’ get love from the Wall Street Journal

Back in August, Wayward reported on local jazz legend Bobby Watson’s latest, The Gates BBQ Suite, a seven-part composition released in September.  We’re not the only ones who’ve taken note of Watson’s activities. Last week, the Wall Street Journal — you know, the newspaper with the highest circulation in the country — wrote a fairly extensive piece on Mr. Watson….

‘Kevin Yoder’ sends weird tweet about homophobe Carl Paladino

%{}% Republican congressional candidate Kevin Yoder’s Twitter feed does more cheer-leading than attention-getting. “Yoder for Congress Vets Coalition is rocking out the phones tonight!” reads a typical update from late September. But yesterday @KevinYoder sent a perplexing message. The Twitter account retweeted a post from Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos, who linked to an interview he conducted with Carl…

Q&A: Saharan Gazelle Boy on synths, Capybara, Westport Cafe & Bar

Darin Seal plays in Capybara and also has a solo project called Saharan Gazelle Boy, which is on the bill for tonight’s free Drums show at RecordBar.  Saharan Gazelle Boy has a new, ’80s-influenced, synth-y EP out, Strange Teen Heart. I’ve been listening to it a lot because I’m reviewing it for the paper — spoiler alert: it’s a favorable review…

Could Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s plan to halt home foreclosures make things even worse?

The Funk wants to put a stop to foreclosures. As evidence mounts that trigger-happy banks have been improperly foreclosing on homes across the country, Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser is grabbing some publicity by calling for a state-wide moratorium on foreclosures. Anything that forces the banks to holster their signing pens sounds like a good plan. But calls for…

‘Venice’ makes its way out to L.A. with Brandon Draper on drums

This past spring, Venice, the hip-hop musical created by Kansas City Repertory Theatre artistic director Eric Rosen and composer Matt Sax, made its world premiere. No less a voice than Time magazine called it the best musical of the year — not just in Kansas City, in the whole United States.  Brandon Draper, drummer for local beloved jazz ensemble Organic Proof, sat…

If they can’t pronounce the dish, they won’t order it

Executive chef Martin Heuser Martin Heuser, the executive chef at the Westin Crown Center Hotel, doesn’t wear his white chef’s jacket every day. In fact, he’s more frequently seen in a dress suit. “I’m not just the executive chef in the hotel,” Heuser explains. “I’m also the food and beverage director.” There are plenty of challenges in wearing both…

The Beautiful Kind, Missouri sex blogger, outs herself

National Coming Out Day was yesterday, and coming out can mean a lot of different things for different people. For St. Louis sex blogger The Beautiful Kind, it means going public with her true identity. No more anonymous blogging or cropping her head out of heads for Kendra Holliday. The 38-year-old divorced mother is out in the open. The Pitch’s…

McRib is the bigfoot of specialty fast food sandwiches

Somewhere the beast is waiting for you. A meat patty shaped to look like rib bones, but without actual bones. It is the McRib I speak of….but not too loudly, for I don’t want to waken it. The Wall Street Journal tells tale of the lengths to which McRib enthusiasts go, telling a story of desperation mixed with unhealthy obsession….

3,000 marijuana plants found in central Kansas

%{}% I wish Nancy Botwin were growing her weeds in Kansas. Sad times for Kansas pot smokers. Deer hunters stumbled across a huge marijuana grow operation in central Kansas on Friday. How big? “About 3,000 towering marijuana plants,” each worth $1,000, according to the Associated Press. The AP adds that the plants were being tended to by people living…

Tech N9ne, rapper, cult figure, zombie?

Menomena brings its cerebral art-rock to Lawrence tonight

Menomena has a sound all its own. One of the members, Brent Knopf, invented a complex digital looping program — he calls it the Deeler — that the Portland, Oregon, band uses during the recording process. Menomena is musically versatile and ambitious, too, able to chop up and loop together a kitchen-sink jumble of tech-savvy art rock — saxophones, xylophones,…

The Drums play at the RecordBar tonight, for free

The Drums are playing at the RecordBar for a (formerly secret) free show tonight. By now, you’ve probably heard the much-buzzed beachcombers’ song, “Let’s Go Surfing.”  It’s a little bit like Robert Smith, um, standing on a beach and staring at the sea: new wave vocals, ennui, and a refrain you’ll remember even when you’re drunk and sunburned: Oh mama / I…

The idiot box: five great theme song covers

Less Than Jake releases yet another collection of covers today (and follows previous Slayer and Grease cover albums). Entitled TV/EP, it consists entirely of theme songs to television programs, as well as couple of commercials. It’s of mixed quality, but you can at least stream the whole thing and save yourself a few bucks. Here are five other covers of…
