Looks like we jumped the gun when we told you the Vi Tran Band would be opening for Aretha Franklin. He’ll still be playing 1YEAR2GO, which is a celebration of the countdown to the opening of the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts. There will also be a lineup of the 19 other musicians playing the celebration. Check the lineup after…

The Walkmen playing Standard’s fall fashion show on the plaza?

Remember that really artsy Saturn commercial set to  the Walkmen’s song, circa 2003? Or when the band performed on an episode of The O.C. (RIP)? Certainly, you remember when they rivaled the Strokes in terms of high-quality retro shtick throughout the mid-aughts. Well, Saturn, The O.C. and the Strokes may all have fallen by the wayside, but the Walkmen have carried on,…

Stephene Moore’s campaign manager sued for breach of contract

Rent’s due by the fifth of the month, Stephene. As if Stephene Moore’s campaign needed any more bad news (I mean, have you seen FiveThirtyEight’s projections? The site’s predicting a 93 percent chance of Republican “Big Daddy” Kevin Yoder taking the seat held by six-term Democratic incumbent Dennis Moore, Stephene Moore’s husband). Moore’s campaign manager Matt Sinovic is being…

Kansas City Chiefs win … while you were asleep

The Chiefs are going to sell a lot of these. If you went to bed early, you missed a soggy but exciting 21-14 Kansas City Chiefs victory over the San Diego Chargers. The highlights included Jamal Charles weaving his way to a 56-yard touchdown run, Dexter McCluster returning a punt 94 yards — the longest in Chiefs history —…

Attendance suggests Kauffman Stadium renovation was a waste

If a sex tape was made during honeymoon between Royals fans and Kauffman Stadium 2.0, no distributor would want it. The Royals are averaging 19,987 fans a game this year. Nightly attendance was 19,986 in 2008, the last year of the “old” Kauffman Stadium. So it would appear that taxpayers ($225 million) and the Royals ($25 million) pooled their resources…

Tyrannosaurus rex eats San Diego Chargers fan at Union station

I spotted this tyrannosaurus rex mauling a member of the Blue Man Group wearing a LaDanian Tomlinson San Diego Chargers jersey outside of Union Station. The dino also had a Kansas City Chiefs tarp wrapped around it. A couple more photos after the jump. Categories: News Tags: kansas city chiefs, san diego chargers

KC restaurant survivors not as old as you’d think

The Savoy Grill gets the longevity prize. Having read last week’s Cafe review of the Frontier Steakhouse, Fat City reader Jane asks: “How many other restaurants in the metro are still in business now that were serving food back in 1960?” What a great question — and not as easy to answer as I first thought. There are other…

Tim and Eric’s Chrimbus Spectacular coming to the Midland, great job!

Barring a Chiefs victory tonight, this ought to be the best news Kansas City receives all day: Tim and Eric are doing a holiday tour that’s stopping by the Midland in November!  Monday, November 15, to be exact. The show will feature clips from their upcoming holiday special (Chrimbus Special, LOL) as well as Neil Hamburger and Pusswhip Banggang. Tickets…

Tuesday: Pretend to be a KU student — they get cheaper admission to see it-boy comedian Aziz Ansari at the Lied Center in Lawrence. Tickets for the public are only $15, though…if any remain. The return of the fried apple pie

The American fried apple pie dates back at least as early as the first pioneers, who dried slices of the autumn fruit to keep around through winter. Wrapped in a sheath of pastry and fried in butter or lard, these satisfying pies were the original “fast food.” A modern version of the pastry, made with canned apple slices, was a…

Hustler editor, photographer questioned in Missouri sex slave case

The Hustler mag in question, blurred and cropped (via TheWrap). The Hollywood watchers at TheWrap are reporting that the Missouri woman federal prosecutors believe was forced into becoming a sex slave appeared on the cover of the July 2007 edition of Hustler magazine’s Taboo, a title in Larry Flynt’s porno empire. Last week, federal prosecutors accused 43-year-old Edward Bagley…

Listen to Jack White interview Conan; you’ll probably laugh

Are you a giant dork and as inappropriately excited about the Conan-Jack White collaborations as I am? What can I say, the idea of having some Conan vinyl in my collection scratches me right where I itch. For those who just want to hear what’s on the latest Conan 7″ (out on White’s Third Man Records) and don’t require ownership of the physical…

The sixth annual Crossroads Music Festival: early and out

Bill Sundahl is still tweaking his formula for optimal results when it comes to his Crossroads Music Festival. In its sixth year, the homegrown showcase was heavy on the alt-country and easy listening acts, but pretty light on the rock.
