Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved. Hawaii just isn’t going to happen for most of us right now. And that’s okay. But you don’t have to give up luaus just because you’re not on a beautiful island. Instead, you can venture to scenic Kansas City, Kansas…

ESPN ranks a Mizzou heartbreaker … but not the one you’d think

The Missouri Tigers cracked a top 20. Not USA Today’s pre-season football poll, but ESPN’s list of the 50 Most Painful Outcomes in College Football History. But the heartbreaker isn’t the one Tiger fans were likely sulking over. Categories: News Tags: College Football, Kansas Jayhawks, kansas state wildcats, Missouri Tigers

Slideshow: Crowd surfing at the Pitch Music Showcase 2010

Look at last night’s Pitch Music Showcase on the surface and it seems like any standard math problem. How much music and shitshow shenanigans can be packed into one night of music with more than 35 local bands performing at seven different Westport bars at a mere cost of $6? Solve for x. Turns out, the answer is “a lot.”…

The Pitch Music Showcase 2010: the Paperclips, Mouth, the Slowdown, Coyote Bill & His Wild Ones and more

Last night’s sweltering conditions produced a soupy, sweaty success at 2010’s Pitch Music Showcase. Granted, four of the night’s most anticipated acts (Queens Club, Capybara, Mammoth Life and Stik Figa) were no-shows. But, despite some inevitable shit-talking on the Kansas City music scene, it went off without a hitch thanks to our generous sponsor support, always-dependable participating venues and Jason…

11-year-old boy accused of killing David Paul Champ in Independence

%{}% As if we needed any more proof that the metro area is a fucked up place, an 11-year-old Independence boy has been charged with murder in Jackson County Juvenile Court. The Star reports that the charge makes the boy “one of the youngest ever charged with murder in Jackson County.” Just sad. Categories: News Tags: David Paul Champ, homicide,…

Tiffani Hayes identified as yesterday’s homicide victim in Olathe

Olathe police have named Tiffani Hayes as the victim of yesterday’s homicide in Johnson County. She was found shot to death in a home in the 400 block of East Spruce Thursday afternoon. She was 28. Police spent about three hours yesterday searching for her future ex-husband, Terry Hayes, who they called a “person of interest.” The 39-year-old was taken…

Simon Angilda, accused of raping 92-year-old woman, now accused of violating a protection order

Something’s seriously wrong with Simon Takwana Angilda. The guy is already accused of raping and robbing a 92-year-old woman in Leawood on June 29. Really, guy? Apparently, the 21-year-old wasn’t done with the poor old lady. Court records show that Angilda violated a protection order on July 19 apparently having some contact with the woman accusing him of raping her. …

One night of rock: the Pitch Music Showcase 2010

%{}% I have an admission to make: the 2010 Pitch Music Showcase was my first rodeo. Was I prepared to catch all 35-plus acts that we, The Pitch, had packed into Westport in this single night of rock? Maybe. Duly caffeinated and armed with notebook, pen, camera, and weathered Chucks, I believed I was ready to take whatever some of…

Yogurtini’s soft opening set for next Friday

Yogurtini’s self-serve yogurt concept is coming to the Plaza, just two weeks after the first Kansas City shop opened at Zona Rosa. The store at 4853 Main Street (between the Mixx and Chipotle) will have a soft opening on August 13 before a grand-opening celebration the following Friday.   “It’s a wonderful new concept that we’re excited to bring to…

Miss Riot Room and four more events to witness this weekend.

1. HIt the Crossroads. That’s right — it’s First Friday again, so walk around in the heat and look at some art. 2. Put on some ruby slippers. Not those ruby slippers, but the bold ballet footwear that inspired the title of the super-influential film The Red Shoes, re-mastered and showing at the Tivoli for one week only. 3. Put…

Fat City on the ‘Walt Bodine Show’ today: All about splurging

The theme of this morning’s Walt Bodine Show — heard at 10 a.m. on Kansas City’s National Public Radio affiliate KCUR 89.3 — will be splurging on fattening desserts. We know you’ll have a calorie-filled suggestion to add to the discussion by calling 816-235-2888. I’m co-hosting the program with Walt, joined by local food writers and bloggers Chris Becicka, Mary…

Raytown discourages jumping, falling from new bridge

The City of Raytown opened a new East 63rd Street bridge crossing over the weekend. The city’s downtown, such as it is, is now a hell of a lot easier to reach. The new bridge features wider sidewalks. Pedestrians have more room to operate — and less opportunity to get into trouble. Barriers made of masonry and iron reach 10…

Crowd Surfing at the Pitch Music Showcase

One night of rock. Seven bars. Thirty-five plus bands. Six dollars. Those numbers added up to around 2,500 of music lovers descending on Westport for the Pitch Music Showcase. Photographer Paul Andrews was on the scene, checking out the crowd.

Warwick Boulevard is a cesspool

Sewage the color of lime Jell-O is streaming out of a busted sewer line at the intersection of Warwick Boulevard and 40th Street. It’s really gross. The city and owners of a nearby apartment building have been sparring over who is responsible for fixing the stomach-turning problem. Mercifully, a crew of plumbers was finally getting around to fixing it this…

Happy Hour Hunt: Mike’s Tavern

The Place: Mike’s Tavern, 5424 Troost, 816-437-9400. The Hours: Monday to Friday, 3 to 6 p.m. Daily drink specials after 9 p.m. The Vibe: The light is dim and the wood is polished at Mike’s Tavern. It’s like the 46-year-old neighborhood bar got a shave and a haircut before it reopened in May. This bar is comfortable, even when it’s…

Missouri Coalition for the Environment sues the EPA over poopy waterways

Yesterday, the Missouri Coalition for the Environment filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency in federal court in Kansas City. The group alleges that the EPA has failed to enforce the rules set forth in the 1972 Clean Water Act on more than 150,000 miles of streams and creeks in Missouri. At issue are Missouri’s “unclassified” waterways, such as Kiefer…
