Something Corporate reunion show at the Uptown tonight

Remember when whiny frontmen were all the rage? Yes, you do, somewhere back in the cobwebby corners of your memory, between your checkered Vans and emo hair. (Or maybe that’s just my memory.) Something Corporate songwriter and singer Andrew McMahon is the crown prince of plaintive pop-punk. He and the rest of the band broke out with 2001’s Ready ……

Knuckleheads’ Boxcar of Blues this weekend

Knuckleheads is hosting a slew of blues artists this weekend in the fittingly-titled Boxcar of Blues. (In case you haven’t been down to the East Bottoms venue lately, you can sit outside on Knuckleheads’ porch on top of a reclaimed box car and sip beers while enjoying some smoky roots music.) Here’s the lineup for the two-day festival: Friday: Anders Osborne, John…

Living Social Kansas City is here, and serving up a discount at Kokopelli Mexican Cantina

Coupons are all the internet rage, especially with the Great Recession lingering and businesses using every tool possible to get customers in the door. Groupon has been serving up restaurant discounts for a while now, and this very rag recently launched pitch.com/coupons. And just today, Living Social, one of the original gangstas of the coupon-slangin’ game, launched its Kansas City…

DeLaSalle students build freakishly efficient electric car

Eight kids from DeLaSalle high school have brought shame to the Chevy Volt before it’s even been released. Using a crashed 2000 Lola racecar, 21 batteries, and a lightweight plastic body, the students engineered an electric vehicle rated at the equivalent to 452 miles per gallon. The Prius looks like an Abrams tank in light of their work. Steve Rees,…

Couzins Catfish couple sentenced for telling IRS a big fish story

It may be pushing it to call the three fried-fish restaurants owned by local restaurateurs Dewayne and Lisa Acklin castles. After all, the Raytown location was formerly a fast-food burger joint. But the three humble-looking Couzins Catfish Castle venues have been raking in pretty impressive loot. The problem for the Acklins is that they attempted to hide some of those earnings…

Vampires Suck

Writer-director team Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the Date Movie and Meet the Spartans collaborators who have made a career of catering to ninth-graders with nothing else to do on a Friday night, make movies that aren’t meant to be watched so much as texted during. (Smart money says Friedberg and Seltzer never sit through these movies in their entirety.)…

Big Dummy

It could be said that 2009 was both the high point and the low point of Jeff Dunham’s career. The comedian and ventriloquist got his own show on Comedy Central. But even though it had the highest rated series premiere in the history of the network, The Jeff Dunham Show was canceled. The joker’s act hasn’t been without controversy, either….

Weirdos and freaks, among others, walk the streets of Lawrence every day. But when more weirdos, freaks and street performers than usual are hanging around downtown and providing music, magic and feats of strength, it must be the Lawrence Busker Festival. Two don’t-miss acts at this third annual event, continuing through Sunday, are Mama Lou Strongwoman and El Glenno Grande….

World Sampler

Lost in the recent — and rather idiotic — hubbub over immigration and the 14th Amendment is the fact that foreign cultures are freaking awesome. Need convincing? Try the 31st Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival in Swope Park (Meyer Boulevard and Swope Parkway). Approximately 68 countries are represented with vendors selling authentic foods (such as spanakopita, American Indian fry bread and…

Put This in Your Pipe

These days, it’s hard to find a place in Kansas City where you can sit and revel in a cloud of tobacco smoke. Hard but not impossible. Kansas City’s hookah scene continues to heat up with Jaskki’s Tobacco Café (1400 West 12th Street, 816-421-4177). The warehouse lounge serves coffee, tea and hookah, and is the latest endeavor by the West…

Short Stock

Fresh off a Fringe Fest performance of 4.48 Psychosis, Lawrence’s EMU Theatre returns with its 11th annual Ten-Minute Play Festival. Though this year’s show is titled Cat Scratch Theatre (it being the Year of the Cat and all), the 10 local authors who contributed work weren’t bound by any thematic constrictions to include kittens in their plays. Good thing, too….
