M. Ward chats about what’s at the root of She and Him

Like peanut butter and chocolate, banjo and slide guitar, or a shot of tequila with lime, She and Him prove that sometimes, putting two good things together can make one great thing. Singer-songwriter M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel have paired up since 2008 to make sunny, California coast tunes inspired by 70’s AM radio. M. Ward, musician, songwriter, producer and…

Slayer, with Megadeth and Testament, at Sandstone tonight

Slayer is the only band in thrash metal’s founding elite that never wavered from its creative mission. Thanks to its dogged, almost pathological single-mindedness, Slayer stayed the course while the genre imploded in the early ’90s. (The band also boasts a secret weapon in Dave Lombardo, a drumming giant with an uncanny ability to swing at breakneck speeds.) Slayer’s presence…

Another bloody weekend in Kansas City: KCTV reports that a young man was shot to death around 3 a.m. on Sunday near 8th and Van Brunt. Update #2 (9:51 p.m. August 23): Whitlock told Nick Wright that his contract with FOX is worth “a little less” than  $2.1 million. Also: Deadspin posted a recap of “The Explanation” here. Update (3:17 p.m. August 20): Whitlock just said he’s not leaving Kansas City. Guess he found out the barbecue in Los Angeles sucks. Original Story (12 p.m. August…

Xavier Henry probably wishes he stayed in school

Xavier Henry is still waiting to get paid. The Memphis Grizzlies drafted the former Kansas Jayhawk gunner with the 12th pick of this year’s NBA Draft, but the team hasn’t signed him. The notoriously cheap Grizzlies are low-balling Henry, which is pretty ridiculous given that the NBA has a scale for rookie salaries. Categories: News Tags: Kansas Jayhawks, Memphis Grizzlies,…

Suicide at the Swell Season concert in California

SF Weekly’s music blog, All Shook Down, reports that a man jumped from a roof onto the stage during a Swell Season concert at Mountain Winery in Saratoga Thursday night in an apparent suicide, according to news reports and witnesses. Santa Clara County Sheriff Sgt. Rick Sung reports that the man who jumped was not alone at the concert: “The…

’74/365′: The Pitch Flickr Pool Pic of the Week

Royals fans don’t get nearly as much credit as they should for their undivided love and support of an often disappointing team. You don’t hear us blaming crappy performances on curses like those foolhardy Cubs fans (though we have our fair share of them). No, we diligently stream into the K, cheering and shouting invectives to the sky, only to…

Skeletal-looking 6-year-old boy found in attic (updated)

Update (1:33 p.m. August 20): The story of the 6-year-old boy found in an attic just gets more depressing the more we find out. The Star reports that neighbors who talked with the malnourished boy’s mother say that Rachel Perez told them that “the boy had Down syndrome and lived with his father. Not true considering authorities found the boy…

On the matter of Gibson’s top 50 guitar albums

Gibson, the company that makes awesome guitars, recently made a list of the Top 50 Guitar Albums of All Time, Ever. And I feel like discussing it. Guess how many of those albums were made after the year 2000? What about after the year 1990? The answer WON’T SURPRISE YOU AT ALL.  Categories: Music

For the next three days, you can enjoy samosas and plantains and kebabs, for example,…

New Sufjan Stevens EP, All Delighted People, streaming now!

Ah! New Sufjan Stevens songs! Can’t breathe! I love Sufjan Stevens. That is why, like most of his song-starved die-hard fans, I am fucking stoked that he has a new EP, All Delighted People, that’s streaming over at his band camp as we speak. Whoa! And it even has actual songs, not sprawling compositions about highways and other inanimate objects!…

Overheard at KCI: Lidia’s is for special occasions

It’s easy to ignore the rotating advertisements that play above the luggage carousel at Kansas City International Airport. But when your flight is the last of the night, sometimes you can be waiting awhile. And that’s when I noticed the couple in their mid-twenties next to me, who were running a play-by-play of the ads that appeared that would have…
