Dougan, both 19 and from Kansas City, have been charged with second-degree murder. Zahnd alleges that Ellis was the driver and Dougan was the gunman. They face life in prison if convicted. A third…

Caliente Grill just wasn’t hot enough

Caliente Grill is closed You can add a second failed restaurant to the location at 900 West 39th Street: One year after we reviewed Mexican restaurant the Caliente Grill in the pages of The Pitch, the family-run operation is closed. Before Marijo Goetz and her daughter Patrice Seegar turned the venue into the Caliente Grill, it was the more sophisticated Pangea Cafe…

Kanye West, frugal spender

Kanye’s been doing a lot of tweeting about his glam lifestyle, and today, in response to that, a knockoff Kanye West Twitter account has surfaced. It’s called Budget Kanye West, and it’s funny. Check it out here. Sample tweet: “Kitchen shears are a total ripoff people!!! Just cut lettuce in half with my regular scissors, no PROBLEM.”  Categories: Music Tags:…

The Old 97’s laid down alt-country bliss at the Crossroads

The Old 97’s are a band I’ve been a fan of for years; yet, it seems that every attempt to see them has been thwarted by finances or previous engagements. Last night, at the Crossroads, I was finally able to see the poppy alt-country act in person for the first time. Thankfully, it was completely worth the wait. The weather…

Lamar Hunt statue unveiled at Arrowhead’s new Founder’s Plaza

The Kansas City Chiefs today pulled the blanket off of a nine-foot Lamar Hunt statue. Bronze Lamar is looking north, much as he did 47 years ago, when he moved the Dallas Texans to KC. Hunt’s family and linebackerish NFL commissioner Roger Goodell were on hand for the unveiling. Politicians, former players and Red Coaters cheered and aahed in recognition…

Foursquare is for stalkers … Kansas City blogger finds out (updated)

Update (1:28 p.m. July 30): Kansas City blogger Shea Sylvia is taking some lumps for her blog/Guardian article about being stalked on Foursquare. More than lumps, really. Yesterday, she blogged that she’d received “a graphic, detailed account of how this person would like to brutally rape and then kill me.” Scary stuff. She wrote that she filed a police report….

Your poopified beaches of the weekend

Public beaches at the Lake of the Ozarks and Wakonda State Park are closed this weekend because of elevated E. coli levels. If Mark Twain State Park were open (it’s closed due to high water), its beaches would also be closed for high concentrations of poo-borne bacteria. Coincidentally — except it’s not — Attorney General Chris Koster announced this week…

Plan your night at the Pitch Music Showcase 2010

In case you’ve been living under some sort of social-media-free rock, the Pitch is putting on a local music showcase of mammoth proportions on August 5 called the Pitch Music Showcase, and you best be there. We’ve got 35-plus bands and DJs descending upon Westport, and you can catch as many as physically possible for the low price of six…

‘Why are there no great delis in Kansas City?’

Napoleon Bakery makes a nice Reuben panini, but it’s no deli Here’s a question I get a lot, usually from people who have moved to Kansas City from one of the coasts: Why isn’t there a decent Jewish delicatessen in the metro? It’s a good question. There used to be: In the 1940s, the Kansas City City Directory listed…

Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved. It’s not often that you get to see a submarine commissioned in Kansas City. But that’s the drill on Saturday as the Boulevard Brewery sponsors a live broadcast of the commissioning ceremony for the USS Missouri in Groton, CT on…

Heartless Bastards in Lawrence on Saturday night

This exact same show happened a couple months ago at the Record Bar. (Well, almost. Switch Sons of Great Dane for the Builders and the Butchers, and you’ve got it.) Fortunately, that doesn’t make the lineup any less awesome. For all our Lawrence peeps who missed Ohio’s other kick-ass garage rock group, Heartless Bastards, at the Record Bar in April,…

Michael Lewis accused of killing Curley Tyler on Easter Sunday

Curley Tyler’s body was discovered by his son outside of the Cottonwood Apartments on Easter Sunday. Tyler had been shot to death and robbed (court documents say of a cell phone or cash) in a Cadillac Escalade. Now police believe they have the culprit. Johnson County prosecutors charged 22-year-old Michael Trevon Lewis yesterday with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. Categories:…

Cheesecake Factory celebrates National Cheesecake Day with half price slices

Say cheesecake. Today is National Cheesecake Day. In order to properly honor a holiday of such magnitude, the Cheesecake Factory is offering half-price slices of cheesecake. All of the 30 plus flavors are included in the offer, including the newest  — Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Cheesecake (peanut butter cup chunks with fudge and caramel cake layers). You’ve got two local…

Reach and DJ Ataxic in-store at Streetside Records

Contrary to various rumors, Streetside Records’ ridiculous sale signs do not mean they’re closing. Unlike most record stores across America, they’re alive and well. So well, in fact, that local MC Reach and DJ Ataxic are making an in-store appearance there on Saturday afternoon.  Pick up some real, legal music for once (just kidding, what?) while you check out two…

Larry Schnackenberg, missing Lenexa man, found alive (updated)

Update II (10:03 a.m. July 30): There are still more questions than answers about the reappearance of Larry Schnackenberg, the Lenexa man who disappeared for 20 days before being found Wednesday by a parks employee (who just happened to know Schnackenberg). His sons didn’t have many answers for us yesterday during a press conference. But it sounds like their father…

Prepaid funeral expenses allegedly paid for yacht excursion

Consumer advocates warn that prepaid funeral services are junk. Paying for a funeral in advance is an especially bad idea when the company taking the money operates as a Ponzi scheme. The Missouri attorney general’s office issued a belated warning on Monday to mortality-minded customers of National Prearranged Services, a St. Louis-area company that operated funeral homes and a cemetery…
